A proud graduate of Classical High School in Providence, he distinguished himself as a standout athlete in football and track and field. His speed on the track was legendary—he held the Rhode Island state record for the 100-yard dash for an astonishing 50 years, a mark unbroken until 2004. His athletic prowess earned him a scholarship to Boston University, where he continued to excel in football and track, graduating in 1958.
