Jerry's obituary

Jerome “Jerry” McEniry

June 20, 1952 – December 27, 2022

Jerry, a long-time North County San Diego resident, passed away on December 27, 2022 at the age of 70.

Jerry was born on June 20, 1952 in Sedalia, Missouri, to parents Mary and Joe. After a few years in Missouri, the family moved to Southern California, and settled in Redondo Beach, where Jerry grew up the eldest of three children. Jerry learned from an early age the importance of family values, stemming from both his parents, and the family’s faith and commitment to the Catholic Church.

As a child growing up in sunny Southern California, Jerry spent much of his childhood playing outdoors with his brother and sister, and joining in the regular neighborhood shenanigans. As a youth, Jerry played Little League baseball and developed a true admiration for the sport. Growing up in Los Angeles, he became a devoted Los Angeles Dodgers fan, with a lifetime of baseball memorabilia in tow.

Jerry was an avid reader, and was constantly intrigued by historical and theological works. He took those interests with him through his collegiate studies, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, at the University of Portland. While he actually first met his wife-to-be, Maggie, in one of his classes, it wasn’t until a couple of years after graduation that fate would bring them together after Jerry saw Maggie perform in a concert with her father, and their lifetime of love began.

Jerry married Maggie in 1976, and then began a long successful career as a Food Service Manager, and Human Resources Director, where his leadership and compassionate nature inspired many to be successful. Jerry and Maggie eventually settled down in Carlsbad, California, where they raised their three daughters, Anne, Colleen, and Catherine.

As a father of three girls, Jerry was a devoted family man – patient, supportive, and incredibly proud of everything his daughters achieved and every moment he shared with them. Whether he was cheering them on at a volleyball or softball game, applauding their musical theater performances, giving them professional advice, talking about the latest sports news, sharing a laugh, or just simply listening…he was always there for his girls.

Jerry loved a good laugh, and so has left an indelible image for all – his everlasting mustache, his admiration for all sports, his pure love of chocolate mints and red licorice, his infectious laugh, and his witty humor and puns shared with his wife and daughters.

Jerry will be missed dearly by so many – forever remembered as the friendly parishioner, the kind neighbor, the funny and loyal friend, the caring big brother, the favorite uncle, the best dad, and the loving husband.

Jerry is survived and forever cherished by his loving wife of 46 years, Maggie, his three daughters, Anne, Colleen, and Catherine, his two grandchildren, Savannah and Finley, his sons-in-law Mike, and Jeff, his brother Mark and sister Mariann, nieces Angela and Celeste, nephews Chris, Ryan, and Sean, twenty-one brothers in-law and sisters-in-law, as well as fifteen nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, February 25, at St. Thomas More Church in Oceanside, CA.
