We are both deeply saddened by Jerod's untimely passing. He was a good friend and we both have fond memories of him. Some of my favorites include:
- fieldwork together in the rocky intertidal;
- offshore research in the R/V Kalipi with him as skipper;
- kayak crabbing and then boiling the Dungeness crab (I learned to do both from him);
- enjoying barbecue, smoked meat, and wine.
Jerod cared deeply about his friends and about the world. Although he was sometimes cynical and pessimistic about the state of world, he always saw the best in his friends and was very generous and supportive of them. I know that he lamented the ongoing decline of salmon in the Pacific Northwest – and that he would have been encouraged by the recovery already being seen in the Klamath River now that the dams have been removed. We’re donating to Cal Trout in memory of Jerod to help them continue monitoring salmon recovery.
We’re sorry that we couldn’t make it to his Celebration of Life, but please know that we’re thinking of Jerod, and all of you.
