Jenq's obituary
Dr. Jenq-Sheng Liu, a community obstetrician-gynecologist of almost 50 years of Forest Hills, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2021 in Pittsburgh, PA after a courageous and steady battle with lymphoma. He was 79 years old. He was the son of Jin Tian Liu and Lan Mei Shieh, and was born in Miaoli-li, Taiwan.
Dr Liu wholeheartedly contributed his time, effort, and medical abilities to the small and endearing community of Pike County, KY and Mingo County, WV. He always had a kind and patient demeanor for those he cared for, and would often spend nights at the local hospital overlooking his patients while they were in labor. He earned his MD degree from China Medical College at Taichung, Taiwan in 1969 and completed his residency in obstetrician-gynecology at St John’s Episcopal Hospital at Rockaway, NY in 1977. After his training, he moved to eastern Kentucky, a place with steep and wooded hills that reminded him of his birth country in Taiwan, and established his OB-GYN practice there. He continued practicing there until his retirement in 2019 and delivered almost ten thousand babies in total during his career. He had presided as the chief of the OB-GYN department at Appalachian Regional Hospital and Williamson Memorial Hospital prior to its closing. He took pride in caring for his patients who spanned multiple generations. There would be few times that he wouldn’t be stopped by his patients at the grocery or hardware store with words of gratitude and appreciation for his dedicated doctoring. He practiced humility in a positive way, commonly praying before a difficult surgical procedure or a challenging case.
In addition to his medical career, he was a loyal husband, a proud father of three children, as well as a grandfather of two. He had a significant spiritual transformation and found the Lord later in life. He was baptized as a Christian in 2009 at the Pittsburgh branch of the Living Stream Ministry. He was also an avid fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed lake fishing, having caught large catfish in remote local places like Laurel Lake in Mingo County, and later fishing up in Winchester, KY in his retirement years. He was a generous man, often giving away his catch to others. He also liked RVing across the country, competitively playing table tennis, and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Su-Mei Liu of 50 years, and his three children - Jenny Y. Liu, Jimmy C. Liu, MD, and Judy C. Liu, MD, daughter-in-law Yi Chen Wu, and two grandchildren Mina S. Liu and Jimmy S. Liu.
The family offers their genuine gratitude to members of the Pittsburgh Chinese Church - Michael Shaw, Cindy Yeung, and Lihjen Ng, and to his younger sister Rebecca Shieh for providing the Spirit and comfort during his passing, as well as the University of Pittsburgh Shadyside Hospital for giving compassionate care until his passing.
The family will plan for memorial services in the future. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in his remembrance.
