Background

Hello, community.

My name is Rosalinda Mancillas and I am Jennyann's friend and I have created this website on behalf of the family.

It is with a devastated heart that I share with the community on behalf of the family that an admired colleague, fellow trainer, project leader, resource extraordinaire, illustrator, surface pattern designer, just hired Solano Community College professor (#August2023), innovator, advocate, hardcore vegan, jokester, business owner, friend, sister, daughter, cousin, and light of many, Jennyann Carthern, passed away Sunday, July, 30th, 2023 surrounded by friends and family. Although diagnosed with Leukemia in November 2022, Jennyann's passing was unexpected as she had received a successful bone marrow transplant from her sister in March 2023 and was in remission. Unfortunately, the cancer returned and spread too quickly for interventions.
If you had the honor of knowing Jennyann's light and love, her caring nature, and her laugh-oh her laugh. Her laugh was so infectious because it was the most genuine joy from a person that there was or could be. Jennyann would tell you about all the latest vegan spots and work to turn you to the vegan world. I asked Jennyann if she was sponsored before. She laughed and said she wish she was. Health was such an important aspect of her mission and vision in life. So too was making art for people to feel all the love and joy she had bottled in her heart.
When Jennyann was diagnosed and began her chemo treatments, I visited her in the hospital. As I walked through the hallway towards her room reading the statistics, and options-anything I could do as a friend, I walked in to find Jennyann, not sitting. Not resting. But working! I was shocked. The way she was talking about her art and surface design, her plans for them to make their way to children's spaces and on knick-knacks, it was as if beating cancer was just another item on her to-do list. I was in awe. If she was scared or worried about what could happen, she never said it. She was busy "making moves." I sat beside her talking about a children's book series we had in the works. As she took a call from her mom, I noticed a little treadmill near her makeshift decorated corner. Jennyann made a too-go vision board that she hung on the wall in her corner so it could be easily transported from room to room if they moved her. Her vision was always big-nothing less would suffice.
I asked about the treadmill and she let me know she was participating in a virtual marathon and she didn't want chemo treatments to interrupt her progress. "Damn Jennyann you makin' us look bad. I skipped the gym this morning because it was too far (my gym is at my apartment complex lol)." She laughed and showed me how the virtual program worked, and how the progress is connected with a worldwide community. I asked her again "Are you sponsored by them too?" She laughed and showed me more of the website and more ideas she had to make comfort packages for cancer patients. Yeah, you read that right. As a cancer patient, she was thinking about how to help fellow cancer patients. Her heart and love knew no bounds.
Jennyann was a beacon of knowledge. She loved learning. If she didn't know it, she got loss in research on her tablet. Battery low? No worries. She switched to her phone. Nothing. And I mean nothing would stop her from being her best and learning the rest.
On any given day if you sat with Jennyann long enough, she would show you her list of programs and software and resources and tools to make work easier. "Just gotta streamline it" she'd say. She'd follow up with, "I'll send it to you". And minutes after you left, she would. She wanted people to have the tools to be their best. It's also one of the reasons why she was so passionate in her work and advocacy with youth and afterschool. If the after-school education world had a marketing snapshot, Jennyann would be the ideal educator. Her ideas were so innovative and it was grounded in values that shined brightly in engagement and fun. Just laugher. Our joy was hers. Her smile. It said so much. This entrepreneur lived and breathed her business and her art. She crafted a sense of belonging in the art world when you were with her. She wanted every person to know art and that their skills for any art lived in some practice and trying.
I say this to you all because if you didn't know her, I want you to. I hope by reading just a sentence or two, you got a moment to meet her. It was one of the most profound privileges I've ever had. To know someone is to know their legacy and hers will live long.
With that, the family has requested that we help to lift Jennyann's work and their gratitude for her circles of communities in a few ways. Let our network be Jennyann's family's network. Her family meant the world to her.
Family Requests:
If sometime this week, you could take some time to do art. In any of its forms. Let it be fun and messy. Let it be from the heart. Whether you do art with your programs, your family, your colleagues, your siblings, or your cousins, virtually or in person. By yourself. With watercolors. Color crayons. Buy a coloring book. Color anywhere because the lines do not bind us. Just do art. Photos of the art and the process can be shared with the family on this website where it will be showcased at her memorial.
Share stories. What has been healing for the family is hearing in what ways Jennyann influenced or affected the lives of others. Small ways. Big ways. Feel free to share stories with the family on this website. The website will also provide updates for memorial information if you would like to attend.
Not many may know, but Jennyann was one of the main providers for her family. Her diagnosis greatly affected her ability to do in-person work. I would appreciate it if we could take care of the family in any way we can the way Jennyann took care of us. The website is accepting donations to support the family in the following ways. Whatever we can do, let's do.
Memorial Expenses (~10,000)
Crowdfunding Fees (~5,000)
Transition Funds (~20,000)
These funds would be accessible for the family to pay their expenses for the next four months to give the family (mom and sister) time to grieve and transition. The mother has significant health issues and the weight of Jennyann's unexpected passing has been unimaginable.
I thank you for your time and support. Any amount helps. Whether it be a dollar or the price of a coffee or offering your time to coordinate resources. Anything and everything is appreciated.

THANK YOU!
