Jennifer "Jenny"'s obituary
She was born to the late Leslie George Thomas Chester and Doris Lillie Jack, the first of February, 1937 in Surrey. Jenny grew up with her sister and two brothers in Croydon, and loved taking trips with her family to Winchelsea beach. In her late teens she began nursing school and then met John William Thompson in 1958 at a dance in Croydon. On September 26, 1959 they were married and shortly after blessed with their two boys.
Jenny continued to passionately advance in her career. She worked in the Pediatric Oncology ward at The Royal Marsden Hospital for years, meeting Princess Diana in 1993 while showing her the Children’s Cancer Unit. For four decades she continued her education in nursing while providing comfort to numerous children and families. In 1990 Jenny wrote a book and traveled the world speaking. She became a Freelance lecturer and writer, contributing to many books about cancer nursing and care. In 1995 she was invited to be the nurse member of a working party for the Department of Health, looking at the provision and treatment of care of the child with leukemia.
After separating with her husband John, Jenny spent the rest of her life with her partner Graham until his passing in 2008. They lived in the countryside in Battle near Hastings where she took up a new passion, painting. Jenny was a natural talent and enjoyed mastering new artistic skills. She was involved in her Battle Art Group for many years, and cherished the trips they took together. Jenny loved cricket, gardening, had a wickedly funny sense of humor and loved her family. She was incredibly kind, and will be extremely missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her sons Paul (Amy), and Richard (Sarah) both of San Diego, CA, and her grandsons, Nicholas, Daniel and Griffin Thompson, and her brother Leslie Chester of Germany. She was preceded in death by her sister Ann Fisher and brother Robert Chester.
Funeral Services will take place on Thursday the 16th of January at 11 am.; Hastings Cemetery and Crematorium. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
