Jeffrey's obituary

Jeffrey James Jacobs, age 41, of San Francisco, CA, died peacefully on January 4, 2011, in Onekama, MI, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on August 27, 1969, in Columbus, OH, Jeff was the beloved son of James and Suzann Jacobs. He attended Manistee High School, Traverse City High School, Northwestern Michigan College, and the University of New Mexico, where he studied Anthropology. During high school, Jeff spent four summers at the Interlochen Summer Arts Program, where his love for music—and especially the trumpet—truly blossomed.

Music remained the passion and focus of Jeff’s life. He was a founding member and trumpet player for the instrumental band The Drift (https://www.temporaryresidenc…) which toured throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, and Canada, and released multiple critically acclaimed recordings.

In addition to his music career, Jeff was a talented sous chef who worked in several of San Francisco’s top restaurants. He had an adventurous spirit and loved traveling, hiking, camping, fishing, surfing, and playing poker.

Jeff is survived by his parents, James and Suzann Jacobs of Onekama, MI; his sister, Erika (Anthony) Freds of Elwell, MI; his grandfather, Harless Feagins of Onekama, MI; his uncle Michael (Teresa) Feagins of Manistee, MI; his aunt Jackie (Mike) Raczkowski of Manistee, MI; and many loving cousins, great-aunts, and great-uncles.

He also leaves behind a close-knit circle of friends from the San Francisco Bay Area, including Dave (Andrea) Dusterhoff, Russell Jones, Liz Pittinos, and his bandmates Rich Douthit, Danny Grody, Trever Montgomery, and Safa Shokrai.

Jeff was preceded in death by his grandparents Robert and Frances Jacobs, grandmother Audrey Feagins, and aunt Joanne L. Gill.

Jeff was cremated in Manistee, MI. A celebration of life will be held in the summer.

Memorial contributions in Jeff’s honor may be made to the Manistee Band Boosters or the Interlochen Center for the Arts.
