We had the pleasure of staying with Jean in 2006 for a week at the Barbados Primate Research centre. A truly wonderful, funny, kind, gentle, intelligent and very generous man. The world is a sadder place without him…RIP

Oh Jean,

Such a soft spoke gentleman.

We used to play and enjoy so much lawn tennis together every Monday, Wednesday & Friday at Carlton Club. He had bad tennis elbow lateton and then played golf.

He pioneered the plastic roofing tiles and wood from recycled pet bottles. I could remember him getting limestone dust from my company to assist in production .... getting his daughter to carry up a suitcase to Canada for the test.....

Oh Jean

My friend.

Sven Korte
2023, St. Kitts, Saint Kitts and Nevis

Being a young boy my family used to spend christmas time on Barbados. My dad, also a primatologist and toxicologist became friends with the Baulu family.  Finishing high school and awaiting university acceptance, I spend 13 month on Barbados, partly working at the Barbados Wildlife Reserve and partly at the Mc Gill marine research center. Jean took me sailing, diving and we played squash. It was an awaesome time and I still have old pictures in my office showing me as a youngster catching African Greens on Barbados. Thanks to Jean, I became a toxicologist, served 25 years at Labcorp and most recently transfered as a senior director of research and safety assessment to St. Kitts (Virscio Inc.). What a coincidence and well.... all thanks to the inspiration by Jean! He was one of the very few people which had a significant impact on my personal development. Greeting out to all family members.

Suzanne and Kat, it is still hard to believe that I will not be seeing Jean at the beach ever again.  He was so kind to Roger to take him fishing.  Even though they only caught one or two little fish, it was a memorable day for Roger.  I  will cherish the inscription Jean wrote in the book that he gave me.  It was encouraging and inspirational at a time when I needed that in my life.  I remember Kat, when your dad had Flea at the beach and you got a call in Montreal that the little store in Camp Ellis had Flea as he had left the cottage to go exploring.  I have been in awe of the amazing things that Jean had done in his life.  You all must miss him so much.  Dorothy Marecaux

Bonjour Suzanne,

I have just learned of Jean's passing and want to offer my sincere condolences to you and your family. In the narrative, he is described as funny, free-spirited & fearless with a penchant for risk and I can't think of a better description of his joie de vivre.

Bon courage  to all of your family in this difficult time.

so much to remember, all the stories and time spend with Jean and family... from 2000 new year's party in Barbados to catching state record blue shark in Maine with him. Jean was my spiritual father. I miss him already so much. Not his bad jokes that is but all the rest ! He will understand. Love U DAD you 'll stay in my life for ever. Chuck

Love to all!

Some people have big hearts. Some have big brains. Some have big spirits. Some have a big sense of curiosity or adventure or reverence for the world around them.

Jean had all of these qualities. In spades.

And he filled the world - and our hearts - with them all.

He was larger than life. He will be deeply missed by so many all over the globe.

May his energy and grace and joie de vivre continue to inspire us all to lead life as he did, with gusto, bravery and love.
