Jaylan's obituary

Jaylan “Jayy” Phelps Cook was born on January 3, 1993, in Evansville, IN, to Chanel Cook and Marcus Ivy.

In his 26 years of life, he met and touched many people near and far. He lived in four states (Indiana, Colorado, Georgia, and South Carolina) over those 26 years and made an impact, many friends, and unforgettable memories in each. He was a cool, kind soul with a heart of gold. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church. Since a young boy, he enjoyed sports and traveling. He played football and basketball in his earlier years; his favorite football team was the Indianapolis Colts and if Kevin Durant was his own basketball team, that would’ve been his favorite too.

He had a passion for music and worked endlessly, night and day, to perfect his craft of making music. While attending East Georgia State College in Swainsboro, GA, he created his label, YGM, and grew it into a family. He collaborated his label with the SBM label, forming an even larger family, and the rest was history. He was very dedicated, determined, and had a strong work ethic. He became well-known as “YGM Jayy” and gained many supporters, a huge social media following, and an immense, diverse fanbase through his continued efforts and accomplishments. His most recent accomplishment was exceeding 300K streams on Spotify alone!

He was a devoted father, very family-oriented, and truly loved his family. The friends he made also became his family. He always, proudly, represented his roots and upbringing. He will forever be remembered for his big smile, infectious laugh, his style, and his laid-back personality.

Jaylan was called to his Heavenly home on June 28, 2019.

He leaves to cherish his memories two, beautiful children, daughter Leilyn Cheeks and son Zaylan Cook; his parents; his longtime partner, Bria Smalls; his sisters, Gabrielle Griffin and Kaylayah Ivy; his grandparents, Esther Moore and Jerry Cook, Sr.; his great-grandparents, Clara and Harold Jackson and Imogene and Jerry Lowery; and his great-great grandmother, Virginia Johnson; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends. He is preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Turner Cook, and his great-great grandmother, Henrietta Turner.

A Homegoing Celebration for Jaylan was held on July 13, 2019 at 11 AM, with visitation from 9 AM until the service, at Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church, Evansville, IN. Rev. Larry A. Rascoe, Sr. officiated. He was laid to eternal rest at Oak Hill Cemetery, Evansville, IN.
