Paige's obituary

Janis Anita Paige Murphy—known to most simply and lovingly as Paige—passed away peacefully on the evening of July 14, 2025, at 8:45 PM, with her husband Rick and mother Ilze by her side. Paige was 50 years old.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, raised in Hamilton, and having found her forever dream home in L’Ardoise, Cape Breton, Paige created a life rooted in fierce love, unapologetic truth, deep listening, and unstoppable joy.

She was the heart of every room, the calm in every storm, and the ear and shoulder to any who needed to be heard and supported. If she didn’t know the answer to something, she would research until she understood it—just so she could teach you. Teaching was not just her profession—it was her calling. Paige believed in learning as a sacred exchange, and those who had the privilege of sitting across from her—students, friends, family—left forever changed.

She is survived by the love of her life, Rick Murphy, and their beloved sons Kalvin and Karter, whose strength and kindness are reflections of her own. She is also deeply mourned by her parents, Ilze and Terry Williamson; her sister, Cori Sully (Harry); her niece, Hayley; and her nephew, Hazen.

On Rick’s side, she is remembered with love by Linda and Joe Murphy (mother- and father-in-law), Wendy and Jay (sister- and brother-in-law), and their children, Rylee and Tyler. Also grieving are her loyal companions Maggie and George—the family’s beloved dogs who never left her side.

Paige was loved beyond measure—not only by family and friends but by an extended tapestry of community. She was a familiar and cherished presence in coffee shops, corner stores, mechanic garages, beach trails, classrooms, and in quiet parking lot chats all across Cape Breton and beyond. Her laughter, advice, and presence could be felt just as much in a grocery aisle as in a hospital room.

Her Lifeguard Family, where she first met Rick, remained close to her heart always. So did her Teaching Family, which stretched across provinces—and her Hamilton Family and Friends, who gave her roots, fire, and resilience. Her Cape Breton Family welcomed her with arms wide open, and she gave them everything in return.

A place of special reverence is held for her time teaching at Allan Lafford High School in Potlotek, where Paige was embraced as family by the First Nation community and poured her love back with tenfold devotion. She carried these relationships in her bones—not as work, but as kinship.

The family wishes to thank: the ICU staff at Sydney Cape Breton Regional Hospital for organizing a moving graduation ceremony for Karter while Paige was still with us—an act of love and honour no words can capture; the incredible nurses and staff at Straight Richmond Hospital for their attentive and heartfelt care; and the compassionate palliative team who guided Paige and her loved ones through the final days with grace.

In keeping with her lifelong passion for teaching, Paige made the remarkable decision to donate her body to cancer research. Her rare form of cancer will now contribute to greater understanding, healing, and hope for others. Her application was accepted by Dalhousie University, allowing her to continue sharing knowledge—even beyond this life.

For this reason, no formal service will be held.

A celebration of Paige’s life will be held for her friends and family in Hamilton:

August 23, 2025 | 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Nelson High School, 4181 New Street, Burlington, Ontario

A second celebration will be held in Cape Breton in Fall 2025. Details to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Paige’s honour to Dalhousie University. Her body was donated to the Human Body Donation Program to support cancer research and medical education, continuing her lifelong mission to teach and help others. Donations may be made online at https://giving.dal.ca by selecting 'In Memory Of' and entering her name.

Paige didn’t just live here. She loved here. And every heart she touched will carry that love forward, forever.
