Janice's obituary

Janice Carolyn “Jan” Speer, 78, of Lexington, Tennessee, passed away peacefully in her home on April 13, 2025, in her hometown of Lexington.

Born on May 24, 1946, in Lexington to James Clyde Scott and Lula Mae Crownover Scott, Jan grew up surrounded by the values of hard work and community. Her parents were the founders of Scott’s BBQ on Highway 412 in 1962—a beloved local establishment that continues to serve the community more than six decades later.

A proud graduate of Lexington High School in the Class of 1963, Jan went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1970. Her passion for education and athletics led her to a fulfilling career at Briarcrest Christian School, where she served as a teacher, physical education instructor, Head Cross Country Coach, and Assistant Track Coach for an impressive thirty years. Her dedication left a lasting impact on countless students and athletes.

After retiring from teaching, Jan returned to Lexington and channeled her entrepreneurial spirit into owning and operating Wallpaper For Less. Over time, she transformed the business into a charming gift shop that reflected her creativity and love for crafting. Later in life, she continued her service to others through her work with the Department of Human Services in Lexington before retiring once more.

Jan was deeply rooted in her faith and was an avid member of Sand Ridge Baptist Church. She embraced every opportunity to be involved—whether teaching children’s Sunday School classes or participating enthusiastically in church plays and events. Her devotion to Jesus and her church family was unwavering and joyful.

Outside of work and church, Jan found happiness in simple pleasures: camping under the stars, tending to her garden, crafting with care, cheering on Tennessee football games, or spending quiet moments with her beloved dogs Annie and Jody. She had a zest for life that kept her constantly moving—visiting friends, helping others, or enjoying nature.

Jan is lovingly remembered by her son Jonathan Speer (Lisa); grandchildren Daxton Speer (Serena), Greyson Speer, Sabrey Garey, and Brock Garey; as well as many friends and family whose lives were brightened by her warmth and energy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Clyde Scott and Lula Mae Crownover Scott.

A memorial service celebrating Jan’s life will be held on May 3, 2025, 11:00 am at Sand Ridge Baptist Church located at 7535 US-412 in Lexington, Tennessee (38351).

Jan’s legacy is one of strength, joy, faithfulness, and love—for family, for community, for learning—and for living each day with purpose. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and cherished her.
