Janice's obituary
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Janice "Jan" Wornum, predeceased by her beloved husband Richard, her parents Geraldine and James Carlton, and sister Kimberly Carlton. Known for her creativity, wit, intelligence, and originality; her passing leaves a void in the hearts of her loved ones. Janice was born on January 20, 1952, and passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026.
Janice is survived by her two loving children; daughter Imani Wornum and son Malik Wornum. She also leaves behind her adored grandchildren, Adejoke Flanders and Nasir Wornum, her niece Aminah Sillah-Baker and her brother James Carlton.
Janice, a proud alumna of Visitation High School, graduated in 1970. She began her undergraduate studies at Antioch College the same year, graduating with a degree in Political Science in 1974. She later obtained a degree in Communication in 1992 from Governors State University. She began her lifelong journey of creativity, intelligence, and empowerment, inspiring her family and people she met along the way.
An avid reader, Janice enjoyed English gangster books, biographies, English mystery, crime drama, and horror genres. She had an expansive taste in music spanning the Beatles to Jazz and 80's New Wave music. Janice enjoyed her steak and lamb, and was particularly fond of desserts, with cake being her favorite.
A strong advocate for political and social justice, Janice encouraged everyone around her to be true to themselves and pursue new experiences. She loved spending time gardening, cooking, and keeping up with political events. An exercise enthusiast, she enjoyed Pilates, ballet, and walking.
Janice's favorite vacation spots were cruises, Mexico, Caribbean, and London. Locally, she loved visiting The Jazz Showcase, Fogo de Chao, and the Museum of Science and Industry. She also enjoyed exploring Chicago's diverse neighborhoods and learning about their history.
In remembrance of Janice, her family members cherish her legacy: her creativity, cooking aptitude, exquisite fashion taste, and witty intelligence. People will always remember Janice for these traits that defined her. Her spirit will live on in those who were fortunate to know her, and she will be deeply missed.
