Janice's obituary
She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, February 24, 1942, to Irene and Albert Del Monte. Her father was an officer in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps, and with her parents Janice lived in Massachusetts, Virginia, Maryland, and Alabama, as well as two stints abroad in Germany and Brazil. During their time in Germany the family visited Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Monaco, and France, and the latter country -- its capital city in particular -- would later occupy a very special place in her heart.
As a young woman she moved to the Washington, D.C., area, where she married and had three children, Donald Jeffrey, Melissa Page, and Amanda Blythe. She worked in a variety of jobs, including time in the legal and retail fields and as a court reporter, but her passions always lay in the arts. She was a talented writer, sketch artist, and stained glass artisan.
After a trip to Paris in the late 1990s, a place she hadn't visited since her childhood in the 1940s, Jan was smitten with the city and set about becoming fluent in French through classes at D.C.'s Alliance Française. She moved to Paris in 2005 and pursued studies in fine and decorative arts, reluctantly returning to the United States in 2010 and settling in the Atlanta area with daughter Melissa, who had a daughter of her own at this point, Rachel Hillary, and a granddaughter, Ariel Dylan. She returned to Paris several times over the ensuing years, including a trip just weeks before her diagnosis, during which she was able to visit with longtime special friend Denis Baras.
Jan shared her appreciation for Paris and its many artistic treasures with people around the world through her blogs and her work advising art collectors and travelers to Paris. She also loved fashion and flowers (especially irises and lilies of the valley, the namesake of one of her blogs). She adopted several beloved dogs over her life, including Bridget, Cubby, and Mimi, and she adored grand-dogs Charlie, Phoebe, Barney, Hannah, Harper, Seamus, and Olive. She had a razor-sharp wit, a beautiful smile, and a keen appreciation for French desserts and wine.
She leaves behind many family and friends who will miss her dearly.
