Janice Williams Brito, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cherished member of the community, peacefully passed away on February 10, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and strength.
Janice Maria Paulk entered the world on July 27, 1948, in New York, NY, to Frances Paulk and John Raby. During her early years, Janice and her mother relocated to Philadelphia, where she spent her formative childhood and adolescent years. Janice thrived in this vibrant city, excelling academically at Saint Francis de Sales Catholic School for Girls, where she enthusiastically participated in both the school and church choirs, nurturing her love for music and community involvement.
Janice's journey with Clarence S. Williams began when Clarence answered the door one day and laid eyes on Janice. Instantly captivated, Clarence fell in love with Janice, marking the beginning of their relationship. Their bond deepened over time, leading to their marriage on October 3, 1964, marking the start of Janice's life as a devoted Navy wife.
Their union was blessed with four children: Angela Marie, Maria Bernadette, Clarence Sinclair II, and Jawanna Lynn, each a testament to their love. As a military family, they lived in several naval center cities, experiencing the diversity of different communities. Eventually, they settled in Virginia Beach, VA, where they created a haven filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories together.
Janice's dedication extended not only to her role as a devoted mother but also to her cherished relationship with her younger sister, Jodie. Together, they shared countless moments of joy and laughter, engaging in various activities that brought them closer together. Janice's playful and energetic nature made her an ideal companion to her children as well. She reveled in moments of fun and bonding, whether it be through dancing, playing card and board games such as Gin Rummy, Blackjack, Hearts, Crazy Eights, Old Maid, and Spades, or enjoying outdoor games like hopscotch and two-and-four-square. Janice's agility and skill were unmatched; she was renowned in the neighborhood for her exceptional talent as a Double Dutch rope jumper, effortlessly outlasting and outjumping the children. Moreover, her mastery of "jacks" proved formidable; her children quickly learned the importance of strategy as she effortlessly secured victory game after game. This playful competition forever changed the way they approached the game, with a unanimous agreement that Janice had to go last before playing with her again. Her boundless energy and competitive spirit brought joy and laughter to their home, leaving lasting memories of her warmth and zest for life.
In the latter years of her life, Janice found love once again and married Mario A. Brito in November of 1989. Together, they embraced a life in Virginia Beach, VA, filled with shared activities such as crabbing, fishing, scenic road trips, and leisurely walks along the beach. On a personal level, Janice indulged in various hobbies and interests, including drawing, painting, and staying active by playing racquetball and dancing. These activities brought her immense joy and fulfillment, enriching her life alongside her beloved husband, Mario.
Janice remained steadfastly devoted to both her family and her faith throughout her life's journey. In her final days, Janice's resilient spirit shone brightly as she courageously faced each day with grace and determination.
