Janice aka "Susie"'s obituary
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Janice "Susie" Norvell on February 27, 2026. Born on August 3, 1938, Susie led a life of intelligence, world travel, and deep affection for her loved ones. Her loss is deeply mourned by her surviving son, Todd Norvell, and all those who had the pleasure of crossing paths with her.
Known for her musical mastery and world class sense of humor, Susie was an inspiration for her family, friends, and students. She was a passionate volunteer at Hunterdon Musical Arts, where her love for art and community service harmoniously blended. Susie also held a significant role as a member and volunteer of the International Double-Reed Society, contributing to the society's mission with her unrivaled dedication.
Perhaps one of Susie's most notable accomplishments was earning a Masters degree in Special Education. Her commitment to education was ceaseless, a pursuit as inspiring as it was impactful. Her lessons in Oboe and English horn are cherished and will continue to influence many future musicians.
Susie was well-traveled, infusing an international flavor into her rich and vibrant life story which included a concert symphony tour through the USSR and Europe in the 1950s. The world was her classroom, and she cherished each journey, learning from different lands and cultures, igniting her mind and spirit.
In remembering Susie, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a soul that made a profound impact on those around her. We honor her innate intelligence, her adventurous spirit, and her boundless love of music. Susie will be missed immensely by her family, friends, and previous students, but her legacy will remain forever in our hearts.
She is survived by her brother Daniel Miner of Kalamazoo Michigan, her son Todd and daughter in law Lisa Norvell of Moneta VA, her grandson Ross of Wilmington NC, her grandson Reed of Roanoke VA, and her great granddaughter Sage Coltrain of Roanoke VA.
