Janet's obituary

In Loving Memory of Janet Lee Mains

(October 4, 1937 - June 27, 2023)

On June 27, 2023 Janet Lee Mains died unexpectedly from coronary disease while being treated at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, New York. The family is deeply saddened and shocked by her sudden death.

Janet Mains was born on October 4th, 1937 to Katherine and Everette Sherwood. She attended Lebanon High School and went on to study communications and English at the University of Kentucky.

Janet married and moved to Euclid, Ohio and raised 2 sons. She found herself a job as a dispatcher in transportation and worked for a number of companies in Cleveland, Ohio. Not a position not typically held by women at the time, but one that Janet found all kinds of ways to improve, despite bosses throwing chairs across the room, trying not to give her credit.

She was a fierce bargain hunter, and a mastermind of coupon maximization and was not at all shy about sleuthing the address and doggedly writing to the CEO of a company whose product and customer service had failed to meet standards. She used these skills in her job as a quality control private detective traveling to stores along the highway and at truck stops to see if cashiers would overcharge or catch price switching.

A few years ago Janet braved the cold and moved from her Southern Florida home away from old friends and warmth to live at McGraw House in Ithaca to be closer to family. She enjoyed her new apartment, the beautiful terrace and the wonderful staff and friends she met there.

Survivors include her son Craig Mains, grandson Jasper Mains, daughter in law Jenny Pope and her former husband Robert Mains. She was preceded in death by her son, Thane Kelly Mains, as well as her beloved parents, Katherine and Everett Sherwood.
