That moment when a creative partner marries another creative partner in a surprise ceremony over lunch and texts this photo — with Andy Evan Cohen and Jan Bentley
My brief time spent with Jan last spring, as they (and Andy) designed the sound for our production, provided much insight into the creative heart of Janet Bentley. Their naturally intuitive nature came through in how well they not only collaborated, but understood what was needed … as an artist, as a soul. Our love goes out to Andy and Jan’s family, as they navigate this difficult transition. Peace and love to you all.

Andy and Jan! You made THE LIGHTS ARE ON light up with ON-ness!!! My pleasure and privilege to have been able to work with you. Sending love love love, today and always. Jenny Bacon

Dear Jan,

I was so lucky to have your gorgeous, funny, and badass talent enhance my last play. Your projections on ROOM 1214 exceeded my greatest expectations and knocked audiences off their seats. I know they made a huge impact with audiences in Louisville as well. You were fearless and funny and simply amazing to work with. Add "professional" to that because I didn't even know you were ill. You are an amazing human, and I will always be grateful to have crossed paths. Most of all, I'm glad we shared a drink, laughs, and ideas on opening night.  You are something special, Jan. I send you a big hug and a wish for peace. Thank you for having an impact on my life.

Jan, it has always been a pleasure to work with you and Andy on numerous New Light productions.  Your unflagging creative drive is such a tangible force in the room, propelling you through the long nights of programming and problem solving to achieve those perfect moments of stagecraft.  Your personality always brings warmth to the theatre and to the tech process.  Thank you for sharing that spirit and energy with us. Sending you lots of love from the team of Canadian Associates.

My favorite part about you, Jan, is your ability to push through the hard times with a smile on your face, and a stuffie by your side. When I met you, you were in the midst of fighting this battle, but you never failed to keep the humor and playfulness up in the room. Tech is always a hard process, and a show like Room 1214 is something even harder, with subject matter that can leave a room very tense. You made our shared tech table feel like a home for that week while we pushed through it together, creating beautiful moments with our combined art forms. United in design, we flourished. You flourished. Those drawings, those projections, those films you created were magnificent. The amount of hours you spent on those I can't even imagine, but you did it for the good of the project, and the passion you have for it.

Thank you for giving  us with memories we can always treasure. Thank you for always being unapologetically yourself. Thank you will never be enough. Sending all of my love to you now <3

Janet,

Collaborating with you on Mystic Conversations was magical. You are such a genius. You're so intuitive, smart, multi-talented, and so gifted. I feel honored that we got the chance to play together and create art together.  Wishing you peace and comfort. Love your birthday twin and initials twin, Joey

I did not get to work with Jan nearly enough. They were always upbeat and had the kind of energy that made long days worth the effort.
Jan, I feel incredibly fortunate to have collaborated with you on so many projects. Your artistry has brought such depth and brilliance to every show, and working alongside you has been a true gift. You are not only a remarkable designer, but also one of the kindest souls I know. I will always treasure the hours we spent in dark rooms, dreaming up the impossible together. Sending endless love to you and Andy.
Janet is always such a joy to collaborate with.  We have worked on multiple theater projects together and the creativity and unique perspectives that they would bring to each project was always a marvel and the final product was inspiring.  Peace and love. ❤️

Jan,  I remember after a number of years working together, you and Andy would tag-team projects -- one working on sound, one working on projections, one at tech, one fixing cues -- and I remember saying, you both should start a company. You have so many different skills. And you and Andy came up to me one day and said, we started a company and we're calling it: Roly Poly Productions. And I thought: That. Is. Perfect.

You never brought any pretension into the room. You always were ready to collaborate. You brought so much talent and warmth to each project. You brought fun and positivity and made me and many others better collaborators, artists and people in the process. I'm so glad to have so many memories working with you and I love you very much.

Jan, we are so grateful for you and the impact you have made. I still laugh and tell people about you promising not to “Jan-splain” in meetings 😂 your humor and joy lightens the room, and I’m grateful to know you and to have worked with you. You are a blessing, and I’m sending you much love, peace, and joy.

Janet, every collaboration you've been a part of has been made better because of your presence. You've created some of my favorite sound designs of all time. I always think of you when I hear Judy Garland's rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (the best one!), and also (for better or worse, haha) Sia's Ho Ho Ho, which since Everything Is Super Great gets stuck in my head every Christmas. Whether directing, sound designing, or audience-ing, your presence in a theater is so special. You are so loved! Thank you for your magic!
Janet, you are so very loved. One of my all-time favorite theatrical collaborators - Your imagination! Your passion! Your heart! Your immense talent, creativity, sunshine, and mad genius self!!! You are always so inspiring and full of light, and you make all those working alongside you shine.  And your LAUGH. Oh, it always fills me with joy to hear/know that Janet Bentley is in the audience! Thank you for your grace, beauty, and love, Jan. Wishing you much peace.
