James's obituary
This March 23rd, James "Jay" Lynwood Younger, Jr, II, took his final breath, surrounded by his loved ones in Arlington, Virginia. The sun rose and the world welcomed Jay on October 1, 1967, a day the world became a little brighter. Jay had a difficult battle with cancer and is finally at rest.
Jay was born in Washington, DC to James L. Younger, Jr. and Linda Carter Younger, he spent his formative years in Arlington, VA. He graduated from Ballou High School in Washington, DC. Jay was a man of faith which was evident during his lengthy illness. He joined Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church as a youth where he regularly attended church. Later in his adult years, he united with First Baptist Church of Manassas.
After high school he served in the Naval Reserves, and he worked for the Department of Agriculture and U.S. Postal Service for several years. Jay subsequently pursued his passion and career in Information Technology (IT). Jay earned various IT related certifications and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Cybersecurity from Western Govenors University.
During his career he worked for various organizations in the IT arena and taught IT and Cybersecurity classes. Jay loved teaching and interacting with his students and technical assistants. Recently, he had completed teaching evening IT class virtually, 4 days a week. Jay was so happy to see his class complete the intensive cybersecurity training program this February. He took his commitments to his students, as well his full-time position as an Engineering Team Lead for a major IT company seriously. Jay worked tirelessly while undergoing cancer treatment. Although working during his treatment may have been difficult and many times very painful, his love for his work and dedication to always doing his best to make things better gave him strength to fight every day.
Jay’s primary motivation however, was to see his grandkids. His face would just light up when he would say “I gotta see my grandbabies.” And God blessed him with that opportunity. Jay said his testimony was that God brought him back to Arlington, Virginia to be surrounded by his family and friends that he loved so dearly. This is our family’s testimony also.
Jay lived life to the fullest. He was a loving father to his three children, and a dedicated and loyal friend to his brothers (Mut'im Temple No. 240 and Midland Masonic Lodge 238). He enjoyed watching basketball, and football, doting on his grandkids, and appreciated a good scotch, a good cigar and “Go Go” music. Greeting you with his beautiful wide smile, Jay loved entertaining family and friends. He was a bright light in every room he entered. Despite leaving us too soon, he made a significant impact on those who knew him. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed.
His legacy lives on in his three children (James “Gemare”, Kailyn, and Joseph), and his two grandkids (James “Carter” and Madison Rose “Maddie”).
Jay is survived by his wife, Michelle Davis-Younger; children: James Gemare (Natalie) Younger of Ft. Washington, MD; Kailyn Pelham-Younger of Arlington, VA; Joseph Davis of Manassas, VA; grandchildren: Maddie and Carter of Ft. Washington, MD; mother, Linda Younger, and father, James L. Younger (Wanda) of Arlington, VA; one aunt, Rosetta Younger, two uncles, Gerald Younger, David (Stephanie) Younger of Washington, DC; father and mother in-laws, Reverend and Mrs. Davis of Manassas, VA; a special “brother” Greg Brown, and a multitude of cousins and friends.
Jay leaves us with a legacy of love, cherished memories and God’s promise that we will all meet again.
