Such a good, kind friend! How glad we are that we knew him.
with love, Sue and Roger Sullivan
Jim and I were Post Docs at Queens University in Belfast,  N. Ireland in the mid 60’s where we studied applied physics, we both had our families with us.  One day a friend of both of us came for a visit from Canada and Jim invited him and my family to join his family for a picnic.  All went well until we set up our blankets on the ground and broke our the food, at that point our friend looked uncomfortable,  Jim asked him what was bothering him.  Our friend said it’s raining, Jim said of course this is Ireland.

I knew Jim since I was a 6 year old child in Belfast Ireland, until many many years later as an older age adult. He was always one of the kindest and nicest people I knew. A special person in my heart. I will forever miss him.
We always loved being with Jim at our Strothman family reunions.  He was always kind, funny, and so bright.  The world is a better place for Jim having been in it.  He will be missed and always remembered.  With love from the Leisters
Kate, I was deeply saddened at your father's passing. He lived a very full and wonderful life. I know how much you loved him and will miss him. When you think of him with tears in you eyes, remember all the happy memories.  Love, Alice
Deepest condolences to you, Donna, Mary, Margaret, Kate, and John and families. I knew Jim in his retirement and was always struck by his bright curiosity (i.e., wanting more and more information on organ building), nearly omnipresent smile and bemusement (except with committee work), deep and abiding love for his beloved family, and ability to prioritize what was most important to him. To paraphrase Willa Cather, “He died from having lived” … and loved.

Jim and I were called to the same panel for jury duty for a Washtenaw County criminal court case. During voir dire the judge asked the pool: “Do any of you know one another?” Jim and I raised our hands, and the judge wanted to know how we knew each other. Friends and fellow Episcopalians, we explained. “Would either of you have any difficulty disagreeing with one another if you saw the facts of this case differently?” He asked. Jim and I both looked at each other and burst out laughing, and answered simultaneously, “None at all!”

We were both excused.
