Jim's obituary

James Allen Weigel, known to most as Jim and affectionately called “Wags” by close friends and family, was born on September 7, 1952, and passed away on January 13, 2026.

Jim was born in South Dakota and moved to Minneapolis in 1961 at the age of nine, where he spent much of his life.

He proudly served in the United States Army after being drafted during the Vietnam War era. Stationed in Germany, Jim served as a radio operator.

For many years, Jim worked for Dana Corporation, dedicating nearly three decades of his professional life there.

Jim was known for his positivity and kindness. He was an excellent bowler and pool player, enjoyed curling, and played softball in his younger years. He was also a Commander of the American Legion, reflecting his continued commitment to service.

As a father, Jim was playful and deeply loving — famously standing as goalie while his son fired hockey pucks at him, making routine moments unforgettable. He loved simple joys, like trips to Kmart, and never missed a chance to tease with his favorite move, “the claw.”

Jim is survived by his son, David Paul (Malori) Weigel, and his grandson, Matthew “Matty” Weigel. Though Jim met Matty only once, that moment was meaningful and cherished by the family.

He is also survived by his brothers David (Betsy) Weigel, Dennis (Connie) Weigel, Clarence Weigel, Ken Weigel, and Mike (Debbie) Weigel; and his sisters Jean (Ted) Worner and Mary (David) Goldstein, along with many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by parents, Mathilda and John Weigel, brother, John Weigel,  niece Janna Kunkel, and loving partner Shanon Wolfe.

Jim was previously married to Mary Weigel, the mother of his son, David.

A Memorial/Celebration of Life will be held at The American Legion in Golden Valley on Saturday Feb 7th from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Lunch will be served.

Chester Bird American Legion 8900 Golden Valley Road, Golden Valley, MN 55427

Internment will be at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday February 9th at 10:00 am.  Military honors will be given however there will be no service.
