Jim's obituary
It is with great sadness we announce that Jim passed away on December 1, 2023. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Beverly and his daughter Deirdre, “little brother” Scott Young, niece Deena (Knut) Boeck, great nieces Mia and Zara and great nephew Bo( Svenja). Jim was predeceased by his parents Serge and Adina Timms and sister Diana Cawood.
Jim was born in Vancouver. He graduated from Churchill Secondary School (1959) and UBC and went on to become a Chartered General Accountant. Jim was well respected during his long banking and finance career with Roynat Capital which took him to Montreal, Toronto, Regina and Edmonton and finally back to Vancouver. He later joined Maynard’s Industries as Director of Appraisals for Canada and the US a job he enjoyed because “every day was different”.
Jim believed in giving back through mentoring youth and volunteerism. He was a founding member, serving on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers of Vancouver for 40 years, and was instrumental in setting up the Renew Crew Foundation (Big Brothers clothing donation) funding model in partnership with Value Village. The Jim Timms Award is given every year to recognize an alumni volunteer for their ongoing contributions to Big Brothers.
Travelling was a passion and among Jim’s many jaunts around the world are “The Grand Tour” of Europe with his childhood buddies in 1964, a visit to Moscow to attend the Canada USSR Summit Series in 1972, trekking to base camp on the Annapurna Circuit in1986, and a special trip to Peru where his wife Beverly spent her childhood.
Jim’s keen intelligence, honesty, integrity and generosity with his time led many to seek out his advice and guidance. Most importantly he cherished his time and activities with his beloved daughter Deirdre. Jim will be remembered by all who knew him as a true and loyal friend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Jim to Big Brothers of Vancouver. Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life on Sunday May 5th at University Golf Club in Vancouver 3-6 pm.
