James's obituary

James Oliver Telfer, 100, of Joliet Illinois died July 2, 2018. “Rags”, son of John and Jennie Telfer, brother of William R. Telfer and June E. (Telfer) Roper, loving uncle to (Michael J. Telfer) and friend, passed away on July 2 at his home in the Fountains of Crystal Lake after a long life filled with sports, laughter, and friends. He is survived by his niece Mary Ann Telfer and nephew William R. Telfer and many grand-nieces & nephews, and many friends. “Rags” was known for his outgoing personality and humor, his colorful stories, and his compassionate spirit. He used to always say “I love babies and dogs. I was named after a dog! [Rags]” He spent 4 years in the army during WWII, playing baseball on the army team in Honolulu, and was an army combat veteran serving in the Pacific theater fighting in the battles of Okinawa and South Philippines. He loved sports, especially the Chicago White Sox. He also loved to play sports, playing football, softball, track, golf, and baseball – for a while he was on the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league team. He will be greatly missed. Services will be held this Wednesday, Aug. 29 at Woodlawn chapel on Jefferson Street in Joliet at 1 pm.
