James's obituary
James Sterling Beale, 56, of Mathews County, Virginia, peacefully went to his forever home on Friday, December 19, 2025. Born on August 31, 1969, James lived a life defined by love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to those around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lois Elizabeth Beale and Williard “Duck” Beale Jr., and his beloved grandchildren, Lucas and Brenden Jones.
James leaves behind a legacy of love through his children: Aliza Beale, Christopher Beale, Joshua Beale, Breonna Beale, Harley Stokes, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Stokes, Alana Stokes, Lois Beale, James Beale, Clyde “Tony” Peterson, Thomas “Ted” Davis, and his bonus daughter, Lanazia Whalen.
He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Jaeden Beale, Naudia Hunt, Native Hunt, Genesis Ramey, William Jones, Kingston Mills, Khaleesi Mills, Carson Beale, and Anayia Brooks.
He is also survived by his siblings: sisters Juanita Pryor-Beale, LaTasha Dorsey, and sister-in-law Angel Coates (Kirk); brothers Kermit Beale (Victoria), Larenzo Veney (Anne), Allan Beale, Clements Dorsey, and Bobby Buford.
James is lovingly remembered by his stepmother, Janie Beale, and mother-in-law, Elva Newcomb.
James shared 25 cherished years with the love of his life, Brenda Davis-Stokes, and held a special bond with his beloved friend, Jo Anne Crewe.
James was truly a remarkable man whose warm presence and radiant smile left an everlasting impression on everyone he met. He had a rare and beautiful gift for loving people deeply and genuinely—through laughter, kindness, and an open heart. A hardworking and dependable man, James showed up not only for his family, but for friends, neighbors, and anyone in need of a helping hand or a comforting smile. His humor had a way of lighting up even the heaviest rooms.
Devoted and selfless, James always placed others before himself. Through dedication and determination, he provided for his family and led by example, teaching the value of responsibility, compassion, and unconditional love. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the love he freely gave.
