Been running through my favorite James memories lately and one of the best is when James used to walk me home from school everyday in Montana. He had just started high school and would walk from his school to mine and then we'd walk what felt like a really long way together. This was when we would play his independently created, just for me, Resident Evil RPG. Instead of us just walking silently down boring suburban streets, he had me imagining being trapped in a warehouse with a tyrant, missing an arm, and having to choose between hiding, jumping out a window, or attacking. Each day after-school, the story kept building and changing. I looked forward to it, along with the fast food stops, the jokes, and everything else that made hanging out with James the best. Thanks for making me the spooky horror loving freak I am today.
James ' 37th year as it should have been is celebrated by those he left behind.. remember him in all the good he brought us and the phenomenal mind, spirit and wisdom he embodied in his short years here.. he fought hard and strong to set an example of self sacrifice in light of the shxxxxt cards he was dealt- he ate responsibility like daily sustenance and then like a zen master? Gave us a quiz about life that mesmerized us into searching for answers.. he set the path for all of us to set out on.. what is the meaning of our existence here?

I met James at work; he was our Security guard for the night shift. At first, we were polite and just said "hey! Nothing going on" but soon it became discussions of bad movies we watched, music we loved, which horror movies were the best, what our kids did that day or week to make us laugh or shake our heads, general life events, and what kind of chaos was going on in his security world. We, as a night-shift group, loved to beg James to let us use the taser and it always made him smile and us laugh (he never let us use it). He was part of our night-shift shenanigans, including chair races, paper airplane contests, and trying to jump-scare our coworkers. James was a true friend and a person that made my nights go by faster or at least relieved some of the stresses of the job. I sincerely enjoyed his company, and I will truly miss him and our discussions. He is a good man gone too soon. For his family and loved ones, I am so sorry for your loss. Please know he was our friend and most-trusted security guard.

James,

From my heart,

and from the heart of everyone that knew you,

You are one of the few best friends I’ve ever known.

Ever.

Today, I learned you left this Earth.

It is inconceivable that you are no longer here to share life experience, humor and insight with the people around you.

You were wise beyond your years and with sound character.

The world is at a loss.

Everyone you’ve ever known will miss you for the rest of our lives.

Tell Victor that He is loved and missed more than he knew was possible.

As you were.

James was nine years younger than me, but I always looked up to him.

Both metaphorically in his sage demeanor,

and physically in his stature.

I'm six feet tall, but he could see over my head.

And he always had my back.

In conflict, he demonstrated Warrior Zen without claiming the knowledge thereof.

It’s just who he was.

There are countless times when he showed the way of the Zen Master without identifying or subscribing to the title.

The last time I saw him, he was about to move out of Juneau.

He was about to sell his prized possession, his red Mazda Miata.

(Convertible of course.)

I never knew why he drove that thing until that day.

He drove us up N Douglas highway

with both of our heads poking out above the windshield.

Like two grown men in a toy car.

He had a genuine gift at humor in life,

but we were laughing from the moment we climbed into that grown-up go-kart.

From the moment of takeoff,

the absurdity of the physical dynamics was combined with childlike joy

as he brought the power of that engine to those tiny wheels.

It brought a remembrance of younger years

that now, looking back,

strikes such a great pain

at his loss and at his age.

I never knew why he drove that thing until that day.

Though he did drive fast, he wasn’t reckless.

His calculation was trusted and flawless.

It was the last time he would make that drive

and in that car,

and I’m here to tell you,

…it was glorious.

He was so happy, and we laughed till no end.

As a good friend,

he gave great insight and advice, but only when solicited,

which is such a wise characteristic, rarely exhibited.

They say wisdom comes with age,

but James had a way of making sense of senseless situations.

He was an unpublished philosopher.

In his chosen career path of Safety and Security, primarily in the field of healthcare,

he always demonstrated a cool and calm approach.

Countless times, he exhibited a serenity and acceptance of the incomprehensible

in order to achieve the best desirable outcome for everyone involved.

Most of the scenarios he faced are unimaginable to the general public.

(Many stories, Brother, Many stories.)

We still tell them to this day.

Your memory lives on.

James had a natural temperament that made him great at his job,

which he worked far too much,

for so many years,

but rarely for himself,

and always for his kids.

Sleep was a luxury he could rarely afford.

and indulgence was something he tried to avoid.

After leaving Alaska, he found a home in Wisconsin with actual weather seasons and proximity to his family.

After 10 years of friendship, he was the happiest that I’ve ever known him to be.

He always encouraged me to visit.

Now I’m wishing so badly we had.

James,

You are one of the few best friends I’ve ever known.

Ever.

Everyone you’ve ever known will miss you for the rest of our lives.

I enjoyed doing our team member 1:1's and hearing your stories while working in Alaska and how different it was from here.  You were a great officer and will be missed.  Rest easy James, we got it from here.

My heartfelt sympathy to each of you as you process the loss of James. May your faith in our loving God, give you strength and comfort as you navigate this difficult time..

Your Friend,

Mary

I just shared it on messenger to trusted family- I can't find the right words or memories to share yet.. it's like I'm in a fog.. a timeline I don't want to be in.. I feel I could never honor my son the way he deserves- he was so special- so beautiful, so honorable, so intelligent and so radical.. and he always took on responsibility starting at the age of 3yrs. when his little bub showed up- he had his back.. even while wishing he was our only focus- he shared our love and stood against bullies in assistance to his brother in early school years- he rose to the occasion and welcomed a sister.. he navigated the mom and dad breakup- he welcomed a half brother and protected him throughout his growth- he met the most lovely woman in Juneau.. a sacred spirit of a woman and started a family- he loved and cherished those children above anything that could ever matter.. he found the most profound happiness at the arrival of his son( James) after his Dad- a boy that arrived and brought the most profound happiness and wonder- a boy that would become a man and do great things.. and then when his happiness couldn't feel greater? He welcomed a daughter (Alexandria) his joy exploded- she would be a light and help in this dark world- his love was immeasurable.. and then another great blessing was bestowed upon him.. a loving and beautiful daughter ( Vivienne) a heart for animals and a sweetness and strength he never felt he deserved.. he had God's favor and was ready for his next mission- he left us, yet he never will- he will help guide us through our days and we will see him periodically in our travels... he was an angel in flesh and blood that passed the test.. better believe- he's always a prayer away...

When James was a teenager, unlike many older brothers, he made an effort to hang out with his younger siblings. I have a thousand blended memories of late night Denny's and late night drives, playing chess in hotel lobbies, shooting pool, and listening to James' never-ending collection of CD's in his first car, which just so happened to be a convertible. In my eyes, there was literally no one cooler than my older brother. I still believe that.
