James's obituary

James “Jim” Robertson of Las Vegas, passed peacefully on March 30, 2021 in his home surrounded by family.

Born August 23, 1942 in Dallas, Texas, one of five children of William E. & Catherine Robertson. He lived in many cities as his Father was a construction superintendent for several military facilities, most notably the U.S. Air Force Academy Chapel, which Jim also helped build.

Jim was a veteran, serving in the Air Force as a drummer. In 1964 Jim met the first of his three wives, Toni, at the Newman Club at UNLV. Jim was president of this Catholic college students club, and enjoyed going to hear the big band sounds of Harry James and his band in the Flamingo Hotel Lounge. Jim & Toni married the following year and soon began their family with James Louis Jr. and Kirk Patrick. In 1966 Jim became the first driver on the Las Vegas 'Strip' for the brand new to town United Parcel Service. A move to Colorado Springs in the fall of 1968 followed with the births of Amy Grace and Alan Keith. Running a Conoco gas station in Poncha Springs was his next adventure for a couple of years - then, back to Las Vegas for the rest of his years. He was a retired Operating Engineer in the 501 union, working at the Silver Slipper and then Caesar’s Palace for 25 years. Jim volunteered for a while as a coach of his boy’s baseball teams and was a regular supporter of his daughter's soccer playing. He sang in the choir of St Francis de Sales Catholic Church for several years and later at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church. Jim had a love of boats, trains, off-road racing, jazz & big band music, and a good science fiction book. He was also a member of the North Las Vegas Citizens patrol and Ski Patrol at Lee Canyon on Mt. Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Nancy Catherine Robertson and brother-in-law Bill Breen. He is survived by his three sons, James L Robertson Jr. (Ilana), Kirk Robertson (Katy) and Alan Robertson (Caroline) and Daughter, Amy Sondej (Keith); his brother William Robertson (Michel), and sisters Elaine Breen and Helen Dokter (Gary), 8 grandchildren, Breann, Alyssa, Kylie, Matthew, Dylan, Courtney, Sarah & Natalie and 5 great – grandchildren.

The family asks in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Lung Association.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Canyon Ridge Christian Church Chapel.
