James's obituary

James Mathew Perchlak of Santa Monica, California, died peacefully at home on January 17, 2024. He was 40 years old.

James was born in Garden Grove, California to parents Stanley Perchlak and Paula Nye on September 6, 1983. James graduated from Santa Monica High School in 2002 and then soon after was married to Lorraine Esquivel on April 29, 2005. James was well-loved by all who knew him, and his memory will be cherished forever.

James had a natural talent for connecting with others, and this was evident in the countless lives he touched. People felt better for knowing him, and they often drew strength from the lessons he taught and his kind heart. His love for martial arts grew into a passion for teaching others. Sensei James, as he was known to his colleagues and students, was a beloved instructor in Southern California. He spent many years traveling across the region to train youths and adults, instilling in them the value of self-worth and the ability to accomplish complex tasks. He approached his training with dedication and enthusiasm.

His strong passion for training others motivated him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology graduating with Summa Cum Laude honors from PennWest University in 2021. Along with this achievement, he has also obtained several certifications and accomplishments, including his National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) CPT, certification as a Box' N Burn Boxing Fitness Trainer, Onnit, and Steel Mace Specialist. James also trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy. His goal was to own a company or teach in college to continue inspiring others and positively impacting society.

In 2021, James began a new career in construction, excited about the opportunity to learn about operating heavy equipment, cranes, and other machines used on construction sites. He was proud to obtain his first ICC (International Code Council) Certification after changing his classification from Heavy Equipment Operator to Inspection with the local 12 apprenticeship program. He successfully passed and earned his soil inspector certification, the first of four required to become a Journeyman. James often expressed his enthusiasm for his new profession. After transitioning to an inspector role, James was assigned to a lab where he analyzed soil samples. Although his passion lies in martial arts, he maintains a positive attitude towards his work in the construction industry.

James had a furry pet whom he loved dearly. The pet's name was Munchkin, and he was born on May 12, 2019. Unfortunately, Munchkin passed away on August 14, 2023. Munchkin was not just a cat to James but a beloved family member whom he adored. James often referred to Munchkin as "my smile" because he brought constant joy to his life. Even after Munchkin's passing, James continued to hold his memory close to his heart and tried to fill the void he left behind. That's when James met a cat who looked so much like Munchkin that he couldn't help but be reminded of him. In honor of his beloved Munchkin, James adopted her and named her Jasmine Mochi Perchlak.

James was a person with an amazing sense of humor who loved to laugh. He brought joy to those who knew him and enjoyed spending time outdoors, ice hockey, riding his motorcycle, and training. James had a childlike spirit, which allowed those he taught to connect with him deeply. He had a sentimental side and valued the time spent with his family and friends. He loved engaging in activities such as paintball with his friends, playing with RC cars, camping, and training others in martial arts. James was always there for those who loved him and readily put their needs above his own.

James is survived by his spouse, Lorraine Perchlak, his twin brother, Austin Perchlak, as well as his nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, mentors, and mentees. He has left behind a legacy of love and kindness that reminds us of the good in the world and the preciousness of life. James was a friend and confidante to many, and his passing has left us with a lasting ache in our hearts as we mourn his loss.
