Big Jim's obituary
James “Big Jim” Modesitt
San Rafael, California
It is with deep sadness and overwhelming love that we announce the passing of James “Big Jim” Modesitt, beloved father, brother, chef, and friend to all, who left us far too soon. Jim passed away unexpectedly late Tuesday night, July 22, 2025.
Standing at 6'4" and full of heart, love, and brisket, Big Jim was truly larger than life. He was the proud owner and executive chef of Big Jim’s BBQ in San Rafael, California, where he spent years perfecting his signature California-style BBQ and feeding thousands. Known for his award-winning ribs and undeniable talent, Jim earned four Grand Championships and was crowned Best Pork Ribs in San Francisco three years in a row. He competed at the World Food Championships and appeared on BBQ Pitmasters and the Travel Channel, sharing his passion and love with the world.
Cooking was Jim’s love language. You could find him in the kitchen at any event, cooking, entertaining, and truly being the life of the party.
Jim’s heart was as generous as his pulled pork sandwiches.
Starting with the 2017 Tubbs Fire, Jim partnered with Chef Guy Fieri to help feed first responders. That experience sparked a new calling. From then on, Jim dedicated himself to working with fire departments, police, sheriffs, veterans, and search and rescue teams across the state, offering support and aid through BBQ. His true personality came to life as he turned his passion for cooking and serving others into a purpose-driven business model, one built to directly support those who protect and serve our communities.
More than anything, Jim was a devoted father. His two sons, Domonic (18) and Roman (16), were the light of his life, and he loved them more than words could ever express. He was loud, joyful, kind, and never met a stranger. If you needed something, Jim would give you the shirt off his back, and probably feed you too.
His laugh was contagious, his hugs legendary, and his presence unforgettable. Even now, we can still hear the familiar call: “BIG JIM!!!!”
He leaves behind a legacy of flavor, laughter, and boundless love.
A celebration of life will be announced in the coming days.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a college fund for Jim’s beloved sons, Domonic and Roman, to help carry forward the dreams he had for their future. Donations may be made via GoFundMe at: https://www.gofundme.com/f/he…
