James Melvin Baskin (1942-2024)
James Melvin (Jim) Baskin, 82, of Ridge Manor, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2024, after courageously battling cancer. He will be remembered by family and friends for his kindness, humor, and unwavering support of those around him.
Jim was born in 1942 to Vanelle and John William Baskin in Naylor, Georgia, where his mother was his second-grade teacher. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1964 and was stationed in Key West, Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He later worked as a lineman for Georgia Power in Bainbridge, Georgia, and held sales roles there and in Valdosta, Georgia, before becoming a truck driver for Walmart, a career he enjoyed for more than 30 years. In addition to his love for family, he was passionate about golf, fishing and motorcycle riding.
Jim is survived by Annette Baskin, his beloved wife of 33 years, his daughter Brigitte Baskin, an officer in the US Coast Guard stationed in New Orleans, and his stepson Brent (Liz) Guzzo of Ridge Manor. He’s also survived by his two sons with his first wife Jean Baskin: Mike (Pam) Baskin of Charlotte, and Steve (Elizabeth) Baskin of Atlanta. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John Baskin of Hilton Head, S.C.
Jim requested a private service with his closest family.
