Sonny's obituary

James P. (Sonny) McAdams, Jr., Alamosa, was welcomed into the arms of his Savior on June 6, 2021 at the age of 80. Sonny was born in 1941 at home in a log cabin in Louisiana to James P. McAdams, Sr. and Jewell Murphy McAdams and was the eldest of three siblings.
He passed away after a brief bout of COVID-19 at UC Memorial Hospital Central in Colorado Springs surrounded by his loving family.
Sonny studied music at Louisiana College in Pineville, La and sang opera in several languages. His family used to “tolerate” his operatic singing at the top of his lungs and choir conducting while riding in their Volkswagen Beetle; and going for rides during severe Louisiana thunderstorms.
He had a love for woodworking and made many beautiful pieces. He was known for his “corny” jokes and many impersonations of country singers. One of his favorites was Willie Nelson where he would don his long braids and bandana. All of the grandkids always requested “Cattle Call” and still recall that as being their favorite song sung by Gramps. He loved telling Cajun jokes and he never met a stranger. More than anything, he enjoyed singing and playing his guitar. He sang at numerous weddings, funerals and other events. He never passed up an opportunity to entertain.
Sonny loved the Lord and witnessed to many people throughout the years. He was the music director at multiple Southern Baptist churches in Louisiana and Colorado and often served as music director at revivals. He was also an ordained minister and performed weddings in that capacity, as well. He was truly a man of many talents and gifts.
He was preceded in death by both parents; his sister, Barbara Jean McAdams Conder; and his former wife, Karen Hunter McAdams.
Sonny’s memory will live on through his wife, Arlene McAdams; daughters, Cindy (Kevin) Squires; Angie (Tony) Werner, former wife and mother of his children, Marie Laffitte (Ed) Sanburg, grandchildren Amy (Darren) Aragon; Chris (Shannon) Bonney; David (Giselle) Werner; Chelsea Squires; Nicole (Levi) Rutgers; and great-grandchildren Abbigale, Christopher, Elyse, Bradley and Aviana Bonney; Seth and Mark Werner; Zayden Chacon; and Jacob and Todd Rutgers; sister Connie McAdams Dennis; as well as numerous nieces, cousins and step-children.
A memorial service will be held at Alamosa Christian Church on June 19, 2021 at 11 am.
