James's obituary
James Jefferson Martin, Jr. transitioned on May 16, 2024 at the age of 78 in Los Angeles, CA. Born August 2, 1945 in Jackson, MS, he was the second child of the late Rev. James Jefferson Martin, Sr. and Susie Mae Matilda Jackson Martin. His brother John Milton Martin, sister Shirley Ann Rivers (Michael), and sister-in-law Ruby "Fay" Martin preceded him in death.
James was a 1964 graduate of Lanier High School in Jackson, MS where he was a star athlete on the Lanier Bulldogs football team. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles. He later enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany from 1966 to 1968. After completing military service, James returned to Los Angeles. He became a dedicated Circuit Board Technician, and his work was admired by his colleagues.
James adored his daughter Kim and was immensely proud of the person she had become. Their bond was unbreakable, and James’ love for his daughter was unwavering.
James was the ultimate conversationalist. His entertaining wit and humor mingled with tales of his life experiences were novel-worthy. He will be remembered as being devoted to his family, a skilled technician, and a man who valued the love and connection of family and friends above all else.
James’ life motto was simple yet powerful: "Acknowledge the Creator, love your family, and live your life." He believed in the importance of cherishing those closest to us, and he lived his life accordingly.
As a youth, he was a member of Greater Clark Street M. B. Church in Jackson, MS, where he served as Divisional Superintendent. In his later years, James found solace in his faith and recently accepted Islam. His spiritual journey brought him peace and added a deeper meaning to his life.
James is survived by his daughter, Kim Yvette Pittman, along with his grandson De’Andre Pittman; his sister, Susie Lee Martin; and his brothers, Lee Vaunghn Martin (Betty), Khalid Wilford Shaheed (Bettie), and Willie Earl Martin (Sanjosa). James enjoyed conversations and time spent with his nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved special friends. Their memories of him will continue to be cherished.
