Thinking of you on your birthday, Jim. You would have loved today's river celebration in honor of you. I hope you're experiencing it somewhere, somehow...
Waiting for our turn,
The wave cries whoopie whoopie.
No wait, that's our Jim!
In 2009 Bob and I, and our friend Dennis, were involved in a major auto accident. Dennis died at the scene. Bob and I were seriously hurt and helicoptered to Sutter Hospital in Roseville. I had barely settled in my ICU bed when Jim showed up at my side. I could not imagine how he got there so fast! When he learned of the accident, he must have immediately gotten into his car, stopping only to buy me flowers, which they would not allow into the ICU (much to his famous irritation) and driven at his usual sedate (right?) speed to arrive within what seemed minutes of our arrival! To see his kind face and feel his sincere concern and love was so uplifting and reassuring. I cannot describe the support and encouragement I felt from his presence. It confirmed to me that everything was going to be okay. I will never forget him.

Had a dream about Jim around Christmas time 2019. Wrote a poem describing the dream.

Crenshaw

Car careening along the road.
Me a passenger with no control
Sliding into a thick hedge and coming to a halt.

Immediately I am up on a shed roof overlooking the park
Where Clerici, Hewell and Crenshaw are playing touch rugby.
Sliding down the roof I run to greet him
But he sells the dummy and disappears into the mist.

See ‘Ya

I think this photo perfectly …
I think this photo perfectly captures the love Jim had for animals, and beauty in all forms...
To me, Jim was a man of stark contrast: ribbing, sarcastic “guy humor” on the outside, but sensitive and introspective, with great emotional depth; an adrenaline junkie of sorts who played hard and fast whether it be the river, the rugby-field, or the dirt track, but a gentle and incredibly sweet soul who had an artistic side and would stop to marvel at the beauty of a flower; rugged, resilient and amazingly tough at work or play, but a bit of a “nancy” if he had a cold or got a flu shot (he’d be protesting & grumbling at that one :-); a sometimes ornery, feisty guy who was no stranger to confrontation, but who was very easy-going and had a reputation for being cool and even-tempered on the field; and a man who could be so hard on himself at times, but was always so very accepting of me.

I miss him greatly.

Jim was a great friend, rugby teammate, and tireless, persistent advocate for California fishes and their habitat. In addition to playing like his "hair was on fire", Jim was a tireless supporter of rugby at all levels from youth to old boys. As my son said recently, Jim was the very best at saying "you are the worst" in a loving fashion. We will greatly miss him. He did everything with an intense passion. Our condolences go out to his sons, friends and family.

As he said as he sped by opponents on the field, "See ya!"
