Jimmy's obituary

Dr James Hahn, DDS

1952-2023

Dr James Marshall Hahn, DDS, 71 of Lewiston, Maine passed away on July 18, 2023 after an extended illness at Marshwood Skill Nursing Facility in Lewiston, Maine.

James’s “Jimmy” was born May 2, 1952 to Morton and Charlotte Hahn in Hollywood, California.

Jimmy grew up in West Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley, and Huntington Beach in California. He graduated James Monroe High School in 1970. Then went on to get his undergraduate degree in psychology from California State University, Long Beach 1974. He obtained a Master’s degree in Biology from UCLA in 1977 and a Doctorate degree in dentistry (DDS) from Loyola Dental School in Chicago in 1981.

His first job was as an associate dentist in Bakersfield, California treating the underprivileged and migrant populations. Subsequent jobs were as an associate dentist in various locations in San Diego County. In 1992 Jimmy started his own private practice serving Kensington Park and the surrounding areas in San Diego, California where he practiced for 11 years.

In 1979 Jimmy met Mary at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois where he was working as a lab technician in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) while attending Loyola Dental School. Mary was a nurse in the NICU.

Prior to his graduation Jimmy and Mary were engaged and off to California they headed where they resided for 25 years. Although Jimmy and Mary never had children, they had 4 furry beings from California and 3 from Maine aka beloved cats of various breeds.

In 2008 Jimmy and Mary relocated to Lewiston-Auburn area where Jimmy worked at Community Dental as an associate Dentist.

Jimmy had many interests and hobbies and as Jimmy would say “I have too many hobbies and not enough money or time…” yet he still managed to do what he loved. His hobbies were diverse and included an extensive library of jazz music and numerous jazz guitars from all eras. Mary never worried about the “Blondes” or “Reds” in the closet as they all had seven strings aka Jimmy’s colorful guitars. He enjoyed building plank-on-frame ships from scratch, astronomy, and was an amateur WWII history buff. Outdoor sports included his love for sailing especially catamarans and holders on Mission Bay in San Diego. He enjoyed skiing both downhill and cross country. Kayaking/canoeing were also favorites of his. His greatest pleasure was going to the Farmers Market, Diamond Bakery and Juniors delicatessen in West Los Angeles, California. Bread, Bagels, and cookies were his most sought-after food. Of course, candy came in a close second: jelly beans, caramels, and gummy bears. Mary was always concerned about the amount of sugar he consumed his excuse was “I brush and floss twice a day!” Once he got to Maine, he discovered lobster he could have at will and yes, he did not mind working for his food. Dissecting an entire lobster with precision was one of his great pleasures.

In July, 2014 Jimmy suffered a catastrophic stroke that left him partially paralyzed unable to communicate and unable to care for himself. In the following 9 years he spent his time in 2 long term skilled nursing facilities in Kennebunk and Lewiston, Maine. Shortly before and after his stroke God began Jimmy on his new spiritual path. Jimmy’s quest throughout his life was to find truth, beauty, and perfection in whatever he pursued. Although born Jewish, his spiritual pursuits started later in life. God and the blessed Mother was following and leading him to Jesus. Adoration was the key to his path of conversion. It was in an adoration chapel where he said “YES” and publicly committed to Jesus. Shortly after he had his stroke he was baptized, confirmed, and received spiritual communion while in the ICU at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Although his life changed dramatically his relationships with people continued despite his inability to communicate. He was well loved by both staff and residents at the nursing facilities where he resided. Most important the friends and spiritual prayer warriors who only knew Jimmy after his stroke provided him great consolation and support. His life became an example to them on how God’s Grace and Mercy helped Jimmy endure suffering which is the same promise that God offers each of us.

Jimmy was predeceased by his parents Morton and Charlotte Hahn and his mother-in-law Kathleen Beam. He is survived by his wife Mary, nee Price, sister Rosemary Hahn-Mastrodonato, sister-in-law’s Julie (Michael) Schaab, Patty (Brian) Owens-Sanders, Kathy (Chris) Clark and brother-in-law Jimmy (Brenda) Alferes, Sam (Cindy) Dailey, cousins Donna (David) Hernandez and Linda (Steve) Zigman. Many nieces and nephews as well as grand-nieces and nephews.

The Family would like to thank the many relatives, friends and Marshwood Skilled Nursing Facility who assisted in Jimmy’s care.

Services will be held at Holy Family Church 607 Sabattus St., Lewiston, Me. July 25, 2023. Prayer Vigil will begin with the reception of the body at 10 am at Holy Family Church followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 am.
