James H. "Jim" Gentry passed away on August 17, 2025, in Alexandria, Louisiana. He was born on May 13,1944, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to James Hershel Gentry and Vera Huba Gentry. He was preceded in death by his parents; his aunt, Melba Knighton; and his daughter, Stacy Williams.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Nelwyn; daughters Shannon Gentry, Tracy Patterson (Brian), and Vanessa Lucas (Scottie Richey); son Paul Gentry; and stepchildren Kari Boudreaux and Adam Boudreaux and Kevin Boudreaux (Caroline). He was the proud grandfather of Logan Brewer, Walter Milligan, Kelly Paul Cross Jr., Meredith and Devin Lucas. His step-grandchildren include Gabriel, Emerson, River, Sage, and Violet.
Jim earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from NSU in 1966, specializing in instrumental and vocal music. He later earned his BBA in Business Administration from ULM in 1988. Jim served as a band director for three years in Morgan City, Louisiana, and one year in Jonesboro, Louisiana, before moving into outside sales, where he worked for 18 years. He later founded Alexandria Truck and Gear, which he owned and operated for 24 years. Afterward, he worked with Experience Works for six years and part-time with the Office of Tourism for four years.
An active member of his community, Jim performed with the City Park Players, portraying a variety of roles in stage plays and musicals for many years. He also took part in historical military reenactments at Fort Polk.
Jim was a devoted member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, where he served as a choir member, reader, and an ACTS community participant. Strong in his faith, he lived his life as a witness of service and devotion.
He carried a compassionate heart toward young children and animals, always eager to teach them history, science, and his love of antique cars. Jim cherished his country, honored veterans, and respected all who served.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church.
