Jim's obituary
He was her hero, she was his home.
James Joseph Garbenis, “Jim, Jimmy, Papa, Dad, Jimbo,” 64, of Storrs, CT passed away at home on February 25, 2024 due to a sudden cardiac arrest. His loss was completely unexpected, and his family is profoundly saddened.
Jim was born on June 2, 1959 to the late Rita and James Joseph Garbenis. He was the last of 3 children, joining Maryanne Burbine of Naples, FL (husband Al Burbine), and Joanne Lake of Wakefield, MA (husband Ronnie Lake).
Jim became a father for the first time in 1998 when his daughter Tia (affectionately called “Little” by her dad) was born. He was blessed once again when Erik (“Little Man”) was born in 2000. His heart exploded with love for Erik, his “mini-me”. Being a father immediately became the central focus of his life. Nothing in his life meant more to him or made him prouder than those two wonderful children.
Jim married the love of his life, Leanne Adams, on September 15, 2019, gaining yet two more children to love and admire, Chase and Jenna Bruder. They found in him a devoted friend and role model, someone who looked at their world through the same eyes. They encouraged the best out of each other with mutual admiration and unwavering support.
And then - how could this be better? Chase turned him into Papa Jim, the most highly revered grandpa of all time. Not a day went by that Emelia, Charlie and Ethan didn’t ask to see Papa Jim, who had endless energy and patience for his new playmates.
Jim was an exemplary husband, father and human being. He embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit, and an unending generosity that could be seen in his care of his wife, children, step-children and grandchildren. Not only did he lift up his entire family, he brightened the lives of friends, neighbors and everyone he came in contact with.
Jim served our country for four years in the US Coast Guard. He attended the University of New Haven and received his degree in Graphic Design. After receiving his degree Jim joined the Army National Guard serving in the 238th Supply and Service Battalion, which is where he first cast eyes on Leanne. 31 years later, they became each other’s everything. Jim dedicated his life to the Army for over 20 years, concurrently and subsequently taking on countless jobs to support his family in every possible way.
Jim was big hearted and vibrant, and radiated light. He loved animals but Lucy was his “best dog ever” and she will miss his daily pets and love. He accepted all people and creatures with an open heart, open arms, and a perpetual smile. He had immense passion for his family, renovating their house, hiking, and talking to everyone! Jim and Leanne enjoyed endless adventures and he was never happier than when they were together.
His departure comes as a great shock and a deep wound, and it is gravely felt by his entire family and countless others who loved him deeply in his wide network of community. The family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time and asks that in lieu of flowers you contribute by sharing memories of our beloved Jim on our memorial website.
