James's obituary
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of James Phillips, a beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend. James was born on March 18, 1957, and left us too soon on November 15, 2025.
James is survived by his cherished family: his son Anthony William,, his son James Phillips III, and his adored grandchildren Aja Phillips, Jmani Pace, Alicia Armstrong, and Josiah Thomas. His mother, Estella Byers, sister Zina Curry, and brother Stanley Phillips will remember him fondly. His heart was also full with the love for his great-grandchildren , welcomed into the world between the years
He was predeceased by his father, James Phillips and brother Rudolph Henry. In 2024, he suffered the poignant loss of another sibling.
James was a man of strong character, dependable and loving. His kind and caring nature uniquely blended with being headstrong and ambitious. He was revered as the "King of the Scrubz" - a testament to his one-of-a-kind personality and his ability to bring joy and laughter into any room.
James had a wide array of interests and passions. He relished the simple pleasures of Chicken and Rice, and a chilled beer. An avid reader, his favorite book was "Rich Dad Poor Dad", and his preferred melody was one he fondly referred to as "good music". While not a fan of television, he had a deep fondness for chess, hanging with friends and family, and routing for the Jacksonville Jaguars. His favorite way to stay active was through walks and lifting weights.
He was a well-travelled man, with his favorite vacation spots being "all over the world". But amidst all this, he found solace in the familiarity of 45th street, a local spot dear to his heart. James was a devoted family man, and cherished his family above all else. His favorite color was green, a symbol of growth, renewal and life, much like his vivacious spirit.
James bequeathed indelible lessons of loving family like time ends tomorrow and never holding grudges. His greatest accomplishments included serving in the military and being a grandfather and great-grandfather. His legacy is carried forward by his family, particularly his adoring granddaughters who will miss his crazy conversations and shared laughter. James left an unforgettable imprint on the lives of everyone he met, and his memory will live on in our hearts.
