Jim's obituary
In Loving Memory of Jim "Bapu" Kenney Eckmann,
James "Bapu" Kenney Eckmann, a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend, went to be with the Lord peacefully on December 8 at 11:15 am, surrounded by his loving family in San Diego, California.
Jim was born to Mabel Gertrude Eckmann and Millard "Sparky" Clinton Eckmann in Fargo, North Dakota, a birthplace that held a special place in his heart throughout his life.
Affectionately known as "Bapu” by his grandkids, he was the eldest of his siblings, including Mike Eckmann, Mary Kay Friend, Debbie Bouchoux, and Rick Eckmann, as well as his brother, Steven, who died shortly after birth. He cherished his family, always keeping close bonds with them, even as life took the growing families on new journeys.
Jim Eckmann's deep-rooted appreciation for his North Dakota heritage and his fondness for family gatherings and reunions with cousins were evident throughout his life. He often spoke proudly of his birthplace and its role in shaping his character.
At 16, Jim relocated to San Diego, where he attended Mission Bay High School. After graduation, he pursued higher education at San Diego State University, majoring in accounting and economics. His thirst for knowledge led him to Stanford Law School, where he received a financial need-based scholarship and was honored to be on the Stanford Law Review as a second year, a testament to his hard work and intellect.
Jim served his country during the Vietnam War as a Naval Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. His commitment to justice and service to his nation was a source of pride for his family and himself. His season serving as an attorney defending over 100 Black Panthers was a special highlight.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and faith. A further testament to his generous character, he started a Foundation to support young Christian college students with financial need and leadership potential, awarding over 1,000 scholarships over three decades.
He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 40 years, Helen Eckmann, and his children, Kara Powell, Matt Eckmann, Laura Galloway, and James Hays. He was also a cherished grandfather to Hannah Hastings, Hali Galloway, Nathan Powell, Emma Galloway, Krista Powell, Mia Hays, Jamie Eckmann, Jessica Powell, and Carter Hays.
In his final days, Jim was surrounded by his loved ones, including his wife and family. His final hours were marked by peace as he remained pain-free and enveloped in love on a beautiful San Diego day with a cloudless blue sky above.
While his passing has left a profound void in their lives, his family takes solace in knowing that he is at rest and has found eternal joy in the presence of the Lord. In his last week, Jim had the privilege of sharing special quality time with each of his four children, his brothers, Rick and Mike, and his sister-in-law, Monica.
As the family grieves their loss, they also find comfort in the shared stories of joyful family moments that bring both tears and laughter. They thank all who have shown love and support during this challenging time, particularly those who visited and communicated with them this past week and the last four years.
The details of the memorial service will be announced soon, likely taking place 10-15 days from now. The family is committed to keeping everyone informed.
