I felt shocked and heartbroken to learn of his passing.  I only heard him talk once but he left a powerful  impression on me. My sympathy to all of his family and friends.
Like many others, I listended to the Mel R podcast with Dr. Doty, (just yesterday), and was extremely inspired and appreciative of him as an exceptionally wonderful human being. Omg! Loved it.. he positively impacted so many people in this world. Once i noted in the comments that he had passed away, I was so sad. It's a big loss for the world. How magnificent that he provided such inspiration for all of us. Condolences to his family and friends.

Dr. Doty was my neurosurgeon in 1993 and with his expert knowledge fixed my herniated discs that were pressing on my nerves from a very overweight lady who fell on me at a nursing home.  Sending condolences to his family
From the moment Jim touched down in Sun Valley to speak at our annual wellness festival many years ago, a kinship was born between the two of us and equally so, my family. Our relationship blossomed from there. We both found great joy in each others company and shared a generous reciprocity of skills and professional value. Jim upleveled my connection to consciousness and compassion. I in turn offered insights and advice in navigating Hollywood and related media endeavors. Jim loomed large in my head and my heart, but. in the softest, most comforting way imaginable. I suspect he had that effect on many. His vibe radiated love and as most know who spent time with him know vey well, his heart was not on his sleeve, it virtually enveloped him. That he was able to find ways to amplify and expand his essence gloabally through speaking, podcasts, books, television and CCARE is a gift for all of humanity that now lives-on without its shepherd. Our family's hearts are forever bound to the Doty family's thanks to the eternal bonding that Jim applied through his love and soulful connectivity. Scott Carlin

Magic Shop

Though I spoke with Jim several times and interviewed him twice, I can’t say I really knew him that well. So I was deeply touched when he called me a friend. 🙏🏼💛 He was such a lovely, warm hearted man.

Among Jim’s many great achievements my personal favorite is his moving and inspiring memoir, ‘Into the Magic Shop’. I recommend and gift it to people all the time. But I was curious. I didn’t see how a busy public figure and scientist would have time to develop the craft and write such an extraordinary book. When I asked Jim how he did it, he told me it took him two years, from 6 - 8 am every morning. Both the story and the writing are brilliant. After many of us complained that the audio book was read by someone else, he was kind enough to re-record the audio book with his own voice. Then it sounded just right.

A fun story about the book. It is available in more than 30 languages, including Korean. One day Jim received a Twitter message telling him that the megastar K-Pop band, BTS, had produced an album inspired by his book. Here’s what he said about this:

"Clearly, BTS is very thoughtful in the creation of the music and the lyrics such that their songs deeply resonate with many people, not only in Korea but around the world.

"The reaction to my book has always been very strong and positive in that it has a message about opening one’s heart and overcoming adversity – struggles which everyone experiences."

"That being said, the immense popularity of BTS and the song has not only resulted in my book becoming a best-seller in Korea, but has resulted in a dramatic increase in exposure of the book to many others around the world – boosting sales and promoting the message of the power of having an open heart and of love, which I appreciate and which is needed more than ever."

After Jim’s passing I had a listen to the BTS song, Magic Shop, for the first time. I am listening to now, as I write. It is very beautiful.

In 2024 I filmed an in-depth interview with Jim, about his life and his extraordinary work. I’m so glad to have captured this, never imagining that he wouldn’t be with us for much longer. Soon we will finish editing our conversation and share it with the world.

“The only time money makes you happy is when you give it away.”– Jim Doty

I was a student the ACT program. He was warm and kind and will be dearly missed. Great embodiment of humor, humility and authenticity that will live long in my heart. Deep gratitude.
My deepest condolences to your family Jim. I have known you for many years because I met you after you spoke to the nurses about mindfulness and when I asked, you agreed to speak at our Social Work and Case Management Department's retreat. Many cried when you shared your story and resonated with the mission of CCARE and being Compassion Centered. May we continue your work of promoting compassion and altruism and manifest peace and love. May your legacy live on.
Years ago I was in a seminar Jim was leading and his wife and son walked in a few minutes into the intro. Jim had saved seats for his family and he beamed the biggest smile when he stopped the presentation and welcomed his wife and son...his love and pride highlighted the experience for me which was a high bar.  So sad that someone so charitable, humane, and inspirational suffered a medical complication. I will try to be kinder and more compassionate,  in honor of James Doty...and will never forget Jim's expression of love for his wife and son (probably about 10 at the time). That smile!!!
