Hal's obituary

James Harold (Hal) Doran, beloved father, husband, brother, and friend, passed away on November 11, 2025, at the age of 76. He will be remembered for his calm presence, wisdom, and the steady, gentle spirit that guided those who loved him.

Born in Alexandria, Virginia, he grew up valuing hard work, humility, and education — principles he carried throughout his life and passed on to his children. He had a sharp, logical mind and a gift for math, balanced by a grounded generosity and quiet humor that made him deeply admired and easy to trust. Comfortable being himself, he was never flashy or seeking pity, and he carried himself with a quiet, effortless class — known for his punctuality, impeccable dress, good looks, and unfailing humility.

He graduated from the University of Richmond and later earned an MBA from George Mason University, laying the foundation for a successful career in leadership. He was a proud Marine for a few years and loved his country.  Hal began his long and flourishing career with the Automobile Association of America (AAA) in 1982 as Corporate Affairs Managing Director at the National Headquarters in Heathrow, Florida, while living in Burke, Virginia. In 1989, he became President and CEO of the Automobile Club of Hartford (ACH) in West Hartford, Connecticut. In 2002, he played an instrumental role in the first of several mergers among AAA clubs, which ultimately adopted the name AAA Allied Group. As President and COO of AAA Allied Group, he helped create a collaborative holding company, Auto Club Partners, where he served on the leadership team.

Throughout his distinguished career, Hal contributed his expertise on the Business Strategy and AAA/CAA Joint Committees; chaired the Accreditation Commission, Strategic Marketing Council, and Northeastern Conference; and served on the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety Board and its Research and Development Advisory Committee. Under his visionary leadership, AAA Allied Group became one of the top-performing clubs in the country. He significantly improved profitability while fostering a workplace where employees could grow and thrive, and Board members frequently sought his advice. Hal retired from AAA Allied in December 2011 but continued to provide valued guidance to the leadership team. The friendships he formed during his decades with AAA remained important to him throughout his retirement.

At home, he valued order and simplicity, keeping a clean, uncluttered space that reflected his calm, thoughtful nature. He loved dogs and classic rock bands like Three Dog Night and Guns N’ Roses, and he had a taste for provocative movies and shows, from Full Metal Jacket and Pulp Fiction to Aliens and The Blacklist. Every family road trip began with Sweet Child O’ Mine blasting at full volume, a tradition that still brings smiles to those who remember it.

As a father, he was patient, steady, and intentional. When he said no, it meant no — but he never yelled at his daughter. Instead, he would take her for a walk, speaking with honesty and kindness while teaching valuable lessons about responsibility, self-discipline, and character. After his divorce, he maintained a strong bond with his daughter, taking her to dinner or a movie twice a month throughout high school. He poured his time and heart into his children’s lives, coaching his daughter’s basketball teams and his sons’ Little League teams through their elementary and middle school years.  He had a passion for playing golf.  Each year he traveled with his sons to play some of the best courses in the country together.  He really enjoyed bringing his family to professional football, baseball and hockey games.  Known for his quick one-liners, he never missed a chance to bring a smile or a laugh to those around him.  Athletic, fit, funny, and always ready with an answer, he was a source of guidance and support for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Beatley Doran; and from his first marriage to Dana, his children, Brock Everett Doran (married to Paige Knickerbocker Doran) and Kelli Doran Goodman (married to Charles Emerson Goodman); his grandchildren, Emery Taylor Goodman (15), James Harold Goodman (13), Davis Hugh Doran (11), and Blair Marie Doran (9); his stepchildren, Zachary Trailer (married to Marisol, with children Zachary, Charlie, Bear, and Cameron) and Stephanie Clay (married to Rob, with children Sofia and Henry); and his siblings, Edward Doran (married to Stephanie Doran) and Alberta Curran (married to Tom Curran). He was preceded in death by his mother, Robbie Bramblett Doran; his father, Albert Edward Doran; and his oldest son, Derek Elliott Doran.

Much like Hal’s unassuming but fun nature, he wanted a “party” thrown in his honor in lieu of a formal memorial service. A Celebration of Life will be held in January 2026 at his home in Melbourne Beach, Florida. In keeping with his love for animals, donations may be made to the SPCA, or friends may honor him by enjoying a great song on a road trip, choosing a walk instead of raising their voice, or offering someone the same calm, steady support he so often gave. The family hopes that memories of him will remain close to heart and mind so that his spirit may live on.

He lived with “grit and grace,” an homage to his daughter’s high school motto. His Marine-like strength and courage were balanced by a calm, pragmatic, and compassionate nature. His loyalty, humor, and gentle spirit will be remembered and carried forward by all who loved him.
