Jim's obituary
James was born in Houston, Texas, the middle of three sons of Juanita Guidry and John Clayton. He graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas, and enlisted in the Army shortly thereafter, serving four years including a tour of duty in Panama. After leaving the service, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he had a 20+ year career as an engineer for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s then-new subway system.
Jim was the loving father to two children: Jason Clayton, of Washington, D.C., and Kymm Stevens (Daniel Stevens), of Olney, Maryland, and later a loving stepfather to Traci Strickland, of Brooklyn, New York.
While living in Washington, Jim was a member of Nativity Church, where he sang in the choir. He was an avid tennis player and fan, but his favorite pastime was his boat, where he loved spending time with his wife, Rose Money.
After retiring, James and Rose moved to Bluffton, South Carolina. They quickly made friends and joined The Church of the Cross, where James would eventually be baptized. Jim volunteered at God’s Goods, the church’s thrift store, and served on the board of Bluffton-Jasper County Volunteers in Medicine. He golfed with his new friends and in his spare time made jams to share with friends. He would be featured in Bluffton Today demonstrating how he made his “Jim’s Jam”.
Jim will be remembered as a kind, funny, supportive, and loving father and friend. In addition to his wife and two children, he is survived by his younger brother, Joseph Clayton of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren: Clayton Stevens and Justin Stevens, of Olney, Maryland, and Camille Norris, Victoria Espinoza, and Jordan Clayton, all residing in the D.C. area; his stepson Christopher Babb-Cheshul, of Ringgold, Georgia; and countless dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his older brother John Clayton.
