James's obituary
James “Grady” Luckrain Campbell, age 65, died on June 11, 2023 in Black River Falls, WS. James was born April 28, 1958 in Iowa City, IA, the son of Pauline and Arthur Campbell. He lived a remarkable life, and lived life to the fullest.
In his early years, James grew up in numerous cities. He was proud to witness the American Indian Movement at Alcatraz as a young man in California. He traveled to South Dakota when was 14 and was part of the Wounded Knee Occupation. He enjoyed participating in rodeos, fast-pitch softball (Paulhamus Store and Okreek Team), fishing, hunting, and later took up golf. He attended high school at St. Francis Indian School and Todd County High School and later earned a GED. He went on to graduate from Mitchell Technical College in South Dakota, and began a life time career of an accomplished journeyman electrician.
He married Kathy Arcoren and joined the Marines in the late 70s. They shared two sons, David and James (J.R.). Later, he married Carmen Flood and had their son, Kelly. He also raised Deana and Amber from those marriages.
He spent his adult years in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Black River Falls, Wisconsin, where he remained until his passing. In South Dakota, he worked as a journeyman electrician for Golden West Telecommunications for many years and later lived in Winnebago where he continued his profession as a journeyman. In his personal time, you could find him golfing, fishing and spending time with family and friends. He looked forward to seeing everyone at the annual Winnebago Pow-wow.
James is survived by his five children and grandchildren, David (Kristen) Campbell of Rosebud, SD, James Campbell of Littleton, CO, Kelly Campbell of Okreek, SD, Deana (Dusty) Haukaas of Rosebud, SD, and Amber (Sol) Contreras of Littleton, CO. His siblings, Jacqueline (Alvin) Purcell of Lithia Springs, GA, Susan Campbell of St. Paul, MN, Katherine Campbell of Centreville, VA, Leo Campbell of Soldier Creek, SD, John Campbell of South Sioux City, NE, Roger (Ann) Campbell of Topeka, KS, and Daniel (Kathleen) Campbell of Grinnell, IA. He also has numerous nieces and nephews.
James is preceded in death by his mother, Pauline Campbell of Winnebago, NE and father, Arthur Campbell of Sacramento, CA.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Bearshield, Richard Lunderman, Mike Flood, Sam Prue, Anthony Earth, Lee Brown, Connor Campbell, Maxihikio Neves, Wayne Campbell, Aaron Campbell, Donovan Campbell, Riley Shot With Two Arrows, Isaac Yellowbank, and J.D. Pittman, Mason Horse Looking.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Chuck Fanning, Robert Long Family, Bernie Wilcuts, Paul Paulhamus, Young “Shorty” Colombe, Louis Fast Horse Family, Melvin Staples Family, Steve DeNoyer, the Paulhamus Store Fast-pitch Team, and the Okreek Fast-pitch Team.
Wake Services: One night wake service starting 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 15, 2023 at the Ho-Chunk Community Center in Winnebago, NE with evening services starting at 7:00 PM with military roll call to be held after services.
