James Michael "Mike" Buerkett, 66, passed away Tuesday, December 27th 2022 at Carle Foundation Hospital.

Mike was born the second of three sons on November 25, 1956 to James A. Buerkett and Betty Charlene (Brown) Buerkett in Springfield, IL. He was proud to share a birthday with his mother Charlene.

As a child Mike moved to Champaign with his family and graduated from Centennial High School. He married Jennifer (Cole) Buerkett and they had one daughter, Karlee Jo Buerkett, whom he adored.

At a young age Mike developed an interest in all things adventurous and outdoors. He was a gifted athlete who played baseball and hockey. He later turned coach to his daughter's softball teams. Mike also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He took this interest and applied it to his career as a talented arborist and owner of Buerkett Tree Care. He had a remarkable ability to connect with people old and young. He was immediately loved by all kids and dogs who met him, which was a true testament to his gentle nature.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Buerkett, step father, John Hathaway, brother, Jon Buerkett, sister in law, Dana Buerkett, and niece, Morgan Buerkett.

He is survived by his daughter, Karlee Buerkett, mother, Betty Charlene Hathaway, brother, Dennis (Jan) Buerkett, nephews, Will (Katie) Buerkett and Kyle Buerkett, and niece, Ashley Buerkett.

In his memory, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation to be held at Morgan Funeral Home in Savoy, IL on Friday January 20, 2023 from 1-2pm. Funeral service to follow.
