Jay's obituary

James Borden Smith (64), of Morrisville, NC, passed away on December 21, 2023, surrounded by his family, knowing he was loved.

Fondly known as Jay, he was born to J. Don and Judy Smith, on July 24, 1959, in Atlanta, GA and spent most of his formative years in Hickory, NC. He was an enthusiastic athlete who loved playing club football and continued this passion at Appalachian State University. Jay carried his enthusiasm and passion through to the furniture industry, following in his father’s footsteps.

Jay was a man whose personality shone. He was loyal and giving, always putting others before himself. As a proud father, loyal brother, and devoted son, Jay’s protective nature and honest demeanor reflected a man who cherished his family. His smile was infectious, and he treated everyone he met with kindness.

Jay held many titles in life, from Vice President to business owner, but his favorite role was being a father. He loved nothing more than spending time with his adult children Matthew Smith and Lane Meyers, both of Raleigh. He was immensely proud of them, seeing them as his greatest joy and achievement. His influence and lessons will continue to resonate in their lives and those of others he touched.

Jay fought his battle against throat cancer for longer than we knew. Despite his declining health, he never lost his sense of humor. Throughout his journey, he cracked jokes with family, made silly faces with his grandchildren, and even pulled light-hearted pranks on the nurses. He had the ability to make others smile and his sense of humor will be missed.

In addition to his two children, Jay is survived by their respective spouses Laura Ann (Goodwin) Smith and Jack Meyers, sister Scharme Prevost and her husband Lee of Morrisville, brother Ken Smith of Chapel Hill, and step-sister Bonny Green and husband Tom of Lewisville, beloved nephews and nieces, and three adored grandchildren. His mother Judy preceded him in death in 1990; his father Don and stepmother Margie reside in Wilmington.

The absence of his physical presence will be deeply felt, but the memory of his spirit and love will be forever a source of solace. The family will host a memorial service on Thursday, January 4th at 4:00 p.m. The service will be at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Raleigh, North Carolina.
