Jim's obituary
Jim “Beka” Armstrong brought his love and laughter home today, February 2nd, 2023. After a brief illness, Jim passed peacefully surrounded by his heartbroken but loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Rita and brother John as well as brother, best friend and partner in crime, Donald. He is survived by brother Robert and sister Doris.
Jim is survived by the love of his life, travel partner and wife of 53 years, Barbara. Together they raised the children they loved so much, Julie and Desmond Lanham of Augusta, GA, Rick and Rachel Armstrong of Raleigh, NC and Jim and Megan Armstrong of Columbia, SC. Of all the roles Jim, perhaps his favorite was “Beka” to his five adored grandchildren; Nicholas, Joshua and Emily Lanham and RJ and Joey Armstrong. He often marveled at how each of them brought him so much pride in their own special way.
Born December 24th, 1946, Jim was a beautifully complex but simple man. He was sarcastic but never cynical. Believing there was never an inappropriate time for a joke and capable of amazing acts of generosity and anonymous kindness. He could be tough and intimidating while also being the first one up and most excited on Christmas morning. Serving as a police officer and Detective in Suffolk County, NY for twenty years, he saw the worst in humanity, but always believed in the best in people. As a teacher at Dixon High School, he hung a sign in his office that stated; “No matter a man’s past, his future is spotless”. His optimism and belief in redemption served as an example for his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, students and countless others that were blessed to know him.
He will be missed but his legacy and humor will carry on in the many friends and family that were so fortunate to share his time here.
