James's obituary

James “Jim” Alen Smith, 73, peacefully passed away in his Johns Creek, Ga home on Thursday, January 9, 2020 due to cancer and other illnesses. His family was at his side at his passing. As an honorary veteran of the Vietnam War, he and his platoon were involved in the battle of Suoi Tre, and were awarded a presidential unit citation.

Jim was born on April 30th, 1946 in Saint Paul, Minnesota to Earl “Smiitty” & Virginia (Smith), and was raised with his sister, Sharon, who was born two and a half years prior to him. He graduated from Johnson High School in 1964 and took some college credits leading to an associate degree at University of Minnesota. He later became an entrepreneur/business owner in the IT services industry and also founded a few other unrelated business ventures.

During the late 80's, he relocated from Minneapolis, Minnesota with his wife, Lois, and daughter, Robin, to Atlanta, Georgia where he also found employment as an IT manager/programmer. Several year later he founded EBI Systems of which was a Computer Programming company.

Jim enjoyed sailing on his Catalina 25 sailboat docked at Aqualand at lake Lanier. He also participated in several regattas, of which he won 2nd and 3rd place multiple times each summer. His love for sailing began in Minnesota, where he had purchased and enjoyed his first sale boat, a Hobie-17 catamaran, during the mid-80's.

He also had a passion for photography and had built a private darkroom in his home for developing photos. He also enjoyed sketching with paper and pencil. He played racket ball with friends and had an interest in marksmanship as well. This was something that he and his son had always enjoyed together. He also practiced archery.

Jim also loved traveling. He traveled to Jamaica the Virgin Islands, and many other places.

He is survived by his daughter, Robin Lynn Smith, his son, Alex James Patrick Smith, and his sister, Sharon Seidl.
