Jairaj's obituary
Celebrating the Life of Jairaj Abuvala
A restaurateur and a discerning devotee and aficionado of culture, hospitality, and the finer things in life, Jairaj Abuvala was a true connoisseur. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of food, wine, global cultures, design, art, film, hotels, and restaurants—knowledge acquired through a long and varied career in the hospitality, food, and service industries, among many others. Jairaj appreciated excellence and worked tirelessly not only to earn the finer things, but to share them generously with others, always sifting through mediocrity in pursuit of what was truly exceptional.
Jairaj was honest, direct, and deeply trustworthy. You never had to guess where you stood with him. At the same time, he tempered his honesty with kindness and positive purpose. If Jairaj was critical, it was designed to cultivate, not to cut.
Jairaj was born on August 4, 1955, in Mumbai, India. He spent his childhood between Mumbai and Delhi, where his grandmother and uncle lived. His early years were shaped by intense curiosity, a conscientious commitment to learning, and an audacious appetite for experience.
In 1974, Jairaj immigrated from India to New Jersey to begin working in the restaurant industry. He went on to work with renowned restaurants in New York, Houston, and Atlanta, becoming known for his expertise in fine wines and fine dining. He also designed and built private wine cellars for clients. As he generously shared his knowledge and experiences, his reputation grew, and he published pieces in prominent publications.
Jairaj’s talents and interests were not limited to the hospitality world. In the early 1980s, a close friend recruited him into the gift industry. By January 1990, his business, The Buying Office, rose to national prominence. In January 1993, The Buying Office opened a 30,000-square-foot showroom at the Atlanta Merchandise Mart. And as always, through dogged persistence and discipline, Jairaj regularly ranked among the top sales professionals in the nation.
Though international by nature, Atlanta was home. It was there that Jairaj built both his career and his family. Atlanta was the birthplace of his children—his first son, Nikhil; his second son, Ravi; and his beautiful daughter, Ahna. Jairaj adored his children beyond words and proudly spoke of them to anyone who would listen—and with Jairaj, it was hard not to listen. The success the Abuvala children have enjoyed is unsurprising, arising not only from nature, but from nurture as well. As they were growing up, Jairaj emphasized education, hard work, diligence, and an uncompromising commitment to excellence. His children fondly recall evenings spent together in the home library, reading side by side with their father.
In 2016, Jairaj was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. Following that jarring diagnosis, his son Ravi moved in with him. Their days were filled with chemotherapy and radiation treatments, workouts at the YMCA, hosting dinner parties with friends, and volunteering at Buckhead Church. Around the same time, a midnight-black cat named Martini was gifted to Jairaj. The relationship was initially challenging, as Martini did not yet understand that decorative items were not intended for claw-sharpening. In time, however, Martini learned decorative etiquette—and Jairaj learned to love Martini deeply.
With the cancer in remission, Jairaj returned to doing what he loved most: living fully. He traveled extensively, visiting Eastern Europe, living for a time in Mexico, and eventually settling in Savannah. There, he re-entered the hospitality industry as a concierge, working at some of the city’s finest hotels. The role suited him perfectly, allowing him to guide visitors so they experienced the very best each day had to offer.
In 2025, the cancer returned with a vengeance and spread throughout Jairaj’s body. True to form, he did not go quietly. He fought long enough to walk Ahna down the aisle at her wedding, creating a lifelong memory as they shared a father-daughter dance—his suave moves on full display one final time. He was also able to witness Nikhil officiating the ceremony and Ravi delivering a poignant and heartfelt toast honoring their father and family. During this time, Jairaj also spent meaningful and joyous moments with his first grandson, Gray, and the rest of the Abuvala family.
Jairaj passed peacefully on New Year’s Day. All three of his children—Ahna, Ravi, and Nikhil—were by his side, exactly as he would have wanted. Some might regret a passing that coincides with a holiday. The Abuvala family will not. For them, the holiday will forever serve as a reminder to celebrate a life well lived by a true connoisseur of life.
