Jackie's obituary
In Memory of Jacquelyn “Jackie” Sue Thomas Ormand
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
February 10, 1957 – August 6, 2025
Jacquelyn “Jackie” Sue Thomas Ormand passed away suddenly and peacefully on August 6, 2025, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Her passing was a quiet, gentle close to a life filled with deep love, music, and unshakable devotion to family and friends.
Born February 10, 1956, in Melbourne, FL, Jackie was the cherished daughter of Oliver Preston (Tom) and Anne Marie (Smith) Thomas. Tom worked for Northrup after retiring from the Navy, so she moved often and excelled wherever she landed. She was an exceptional student, a gifted flautist, and—as a true California girl—a talented synchronized swimmer.
Jackie met the love of her life, Owen Ormand, and they were married on September 25, 1982. Together they built a home rich with Twins baseball, Vikings football, laughter, and family traditions. Though Owen was taken far too soon, Jackie’s devotion to their life together never wavered. They raised their two sons, Evan Ormand of Aberdeen, SD, and Taylor Ormand (Jamie Plagman Ormand) of Sioux Falls, SD, with fierce love and endless pride. Their years in Aberdeen overflowed with joyful chaos—baseball, basketball, soccer, football, choirs and band —with Jackie cheering at every moment. Her greatest joy in later years was being “Grandma Jackie” to Owen Oliver Ormand and Everett David Ormand, two spirited little Vikings who carry on names and sparkle.
Jackie poured her love of history and community into 19 years as Curator of Collections at the Dacotah Prairie Museum in Aberdeen, where her careful stewardship of artifacts and stories left a lasting mark on Brown County.
Music threaded through her days—Fleetwood Mac in the kitchen, classical favorites at full volume, and the beauty of Taylor’s baritone voice performances. She loved cheering Evan on as he coached at Presentation College and delighted in following the U.S. Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams. Even during her courageous fight with diabetes, these times brought her strength and joy. Holidays and summers at Roy Lake, SD, filled with cousins, laughter, and homemade food, were among her happiest times.
Jackie remained close to her siblings John Thomas of Cottage Grove, OR; Ralph and Judith Thomas Wickre of Bellingham, WA; and Bob and Christine (Thomas) Fraser of Healdsburg, CA. Through marriage she was embraced by the Ormand family and loved by Ed and Joanne Kessler of Aberdeen, Eddie Ormand of Veblen, Francis “Pat” (Connie) Ormand of Houghton, Roger (Marjorie) Ormand of Aberdeen, Larry Ormand of Veblen, and Peggy Satrang of Britton. She also leaves behind her cat, Callie, her steadfast companion and the recipient of her boundless affection. She also treasured deep ties with many nieces and nephews.
Above all, Jackie was blessed with countless friends who stood beside her through every joy and struggle. The family offers heartfelt gratitude to each of you—you know who you are—for the love, laughter, and steady presence you shared. Your care meant the world to Jackie and to all who loved her.
A celebration of Jackie’s life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to a cause so very close to her heart, the Aberdeen Humane Society.
