Jacqueline “Kapua” Tyler

Jacqueline “Kapua” Tyler passed away February 4, 2023 at the Hospice Hale on her beloved Hawaiian island of Maui at the age of 59.

Jacqueline was born on December 8, 1963 to Bill and Silas Tyler in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She spent her childhood and school years there and in Paraguay, alongside her sister Patricia. After moving to the USA, she studied to become a massage therapist while also obtaining a master's degree in Clinical Social Work at the University of Washington in Seattle.

In the early 1990s, Jacqueline relocated to Maui, Hawaii, where she established her permanent residence. Shortly after beginning her career on Maui, she met Mark, her life partner and father of their son, Noa Makana, whose Hawaiian name means "gift from heaven."

Native Hawaiian culture and spiritual practices called to Jacqueline. She felt blessed to be accepted as a student and an ally by her Native Hawaiian mentors. Her Hawaiian name was Kapua Wahilani, which means “flower that opens to the heavens”.

Ever the student of life and healing, Jacqueline trained in Hawaiian Healing arts and studied Hula. As part of her massage therapy practice she mentored massage students and profoundly impacted the hearts and bodies of countless individuals. As her career progressed she returned to social clinical work, serving the community of Maui with her mind, heart, and spirit. Everyone who knew Jackie was moved by her compassion, her ability to listen and care, and her extensive knowledge of the human body and mind.

Jackie cared deeply and affectionately for her family (including furry family members Kea and Koa) and her extended circle of friends in Maui, the mainland, Brazil, and other nations.

She is survived by her son Noa, her husband Mark, her mother Silas, and her sister Patricia, as well as beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jackie “Kapua” Tyler will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she impacted and those who had the honor of knowing her.
