Jack's obituary

Jack Marion Fannon, age 80, died in his home on July 12, 2022. Jack was sixth generation born in Watauga county, a descendant of Benjamin Ward Sr., as well as one of two beloved sons of Ewing deWitt Fannon and Ivalee Susan Ward Fannon.

As a graduate of Cranberry High School, Appalachian State Teachers College, and the University of Montana, he was a lifelong administrator and educator both in and out of the classrooms.

Jack started his career at Mount Airy High School immediately after graduating from Appalachian State Teachers College. He continued his education at the University of Montana where he earned a Master’s degree with a minor in Environmental Studies. After college, he returned to North Carolina and worked as a Dean at Surry Community College before becoming principal of Beech Mountain School. Throughout his life he continued to teach outside the classroom and even developed programs and manuals for companies such as Caterpillar’s new production facilities in North Carolina.

Jack’s desire to live in the West prompted him to move his wife and four children to Boise, Idaho where he enjoyed camping, fishing & photography in the beautiful Idaho mountains—the mountains where his dad had herded sheep during the Great Depression. Jack took a position with Boise State University directing their Older Workers Program, which he enjoyed immensely. After that program concluded, he took a position with the teachers insurance company (Horace Mann) always honoring the people that educate. He still had his finger on the pulse of educators while helping them with their insurance needs.

An avid outdoorsman, Jack enjoyed family camping and that time outdoors provided the most special memories of our time with our father. We will miss all the laughter and life lessons he shared with us as well as the “fish tales,” jokes and campfire stories. But most of all, he loved his family more than anything else and spent his entire life providing us with everything we needed. His kind spirit lives on forever in us.

He was preceded by his parents and by his brother Ron Fannon. He is survived by his children Richard Fannon, Nancy Henderson (Randy), Tammy German (Tim), and Jonathan Fannon; by his grandchildren Gavin & Zoie Henderson, Amelia & Colin German; by his nephews Brian & Landon Fannon, and by his dear friend Linda Cox.

A celebration of life for family and friends will be held at the Beech Mountain Community Center, 60 Flat Springs Rd, Elk Park, NC 28622 at 3:30pm on Saturday, August 13, 2022. All those who loved him are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Beech Mountain Community Center will be accepted.
