Israel's obituary
1stSgt Israel Cantu, USMC, Retired, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, devoted father, proud grandfather, and lifelong servant to his community, passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the age of 76. Known for his courage, discipline, and unwavering love for family, Israel built a lasting legacy through his 21 years of service in the United States Marine Corps and the generations of family and friends he inspired.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Guadalupe Cantu Garcia; father, Merced Cantu Sr.; brothers, David N. Cantu and Joseph Cantu; and his beloved first wife, Maria Isabel Salas Arevalo, with whom he raised four sons and four daughters and built a strong family foundation rooted in love, perseverance, resilience, and patriotism.
After graduating from Jefferson Davis High School in Houston, Texas, 1stSgt Israel Cantu joined the United States Marine Corps. He later served his country honorably during the Vietnam War, including during the Tet Offensive in 1968, one of the war’s most significant campaigns. His experiences in Vietnam shaped the values of courage, discipline, and service that he carried throughout his life. He earned the Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Drill Instructor Ribbon, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, reflecting his bravery, leadership, and dedicated service. Israel’s time in uniform reflected a deep sense of duty and commitment to something greater than himself—values he instilled in his children and, through them, his grandchildren.
Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, Israel briefly worked for the American Red Cross, teaching lifesaving skills. He then continued his life of service with the City of Houston, where he retired after 14 years in the Department of Public Works, helping ensure city employees followed safe work practices. Through both roles, Israel contributed to the safety and well-being of countless individuals.
Later in life, Israel married Carmen Rosa Sierra, who survives him, along with her three children and four grandchildren, all of whom he embraced as his own.
Beyond his service and career, Israel was a man of remarkable skill and creativity. He was an accomplished woodworker, a gifted handyman who preferred to fix things himself, and a talented designer and builder of remote-controlled airplanes, which he proudly flew. He found joy in working with his hands, solving problems, and creating things that lasted—traits that mirrored the way he lived his life and cared for his family.
Israel, affectionately known as 1stSgt, “Ike,” Dad, and Pops, is survived by his daughters, Guadalupe Cantu de Medina, Marisol Zammit, Adrianna M. Fox, and Paloma B. Lankford; sons, Israel Cantu Jr., Jason M. Cantu, Miguel A. Cantu, and Marco A. Cantu; 24 grandchildren; wife, Carmen Rosa; stepson, Daniel Sierra; stepdaughters, Marcela Sierra and Maria Pineros; and siblings, Mary Sustaita, Hilda Sustaita, Elizabeth Valdemar, Merced Cantu Jr., and Adolph Cantu.
Israel will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, craftsmanship, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched—as a Marine, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, and a man of honor.
