Irene's obituary
Irene Norma Russell
1944 to 2025
It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Norma Russell, who passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at the age of 80 in Calgary, Alberta.
Born in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Irene was the beloved daughter of Charles G. and Grace E. Russell. She carried the Russell name proudly throughout her life, reclaiming it in the 1980s after the passing of her husband, Nick Tyshkewich, in 1976.
A devoted and resilient mother, Irene single-handedly raised her three sons following Nick’s passing. She built a life of care, strength, and quiet determination. She started her own daycare business and later dedicated over 20 years to her role as a librarian with the Calgary Board of Education. Her passion for early childhood development was reflected in her pursuit of post-secondary studies in the field.
Irene’s impact extended far beyond her immediate family. She touched the lives of countless children, families, and colleagues through her work and her unwavering presence. She was a pillar of strength for her family until the very end. She was steadfast, generous, and always full of love.
She had many passions. Irene loved to read, garden, and was well known for her money cakes and famous macaroni and cheese. She adored her pets, Janie the dog and Sweet Pea the cat, who were spoiled in all the best ways and truly treated like family. She cherished quiet comforts, especially a good foot rub or back scratch, and found joy in simple, meaningful moments with those she loved.
A constant in her life was her best friend, also named Irene, with whom she shared more than 60 years of friendship. Their bond was a source of laughter, strength, and love that stood the test of time.
Irene is lovingly remembered by her sons Gerald (Donna) and Warren (Jodi); her grandchildren Amy (Derek), Stacie (Matt), and Rae; and her great-grandchildren Alexander, Jaxon, Paisley, Kip, Parker, and Oaklyn. She is also survived by her siblings Ray, Donald, Charlotte, and Patricia.
She was predeceased by her husband Nick, her parents Charles and Grace, and her son Alan.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the incredible team at Agape Hospice for the compassionate care they provided in her final weeks.
Irene’s memory will live on in the stories we tell, the recipes we share, the flowers we plant, and the strength she instilled in all of us.
